dim area on instrument panel

'99 Ranger 2x4 x-cab 97,000mi.
Just noticed one small corner of instrument panel was almost too dim to read. This is after dark with headlights on. All the rest is bright as normal. Are there multiple lights behind there? In any case, I doubt if I'll spend a saturday tearing out my dashboard.

All the ford clusters I've ever taken out had a bunch of different bulbs in the back. I'd say you have a burnt bulb in there. Jace

You got it, there are a few bulbs back there.

Bang on your steering wheel or instrument cluster (hard, but dont break anything), it might magically come back on, mine did.

I have a light out as well in the lower left corner. Anyone know the difficulty level of removing the cluster?
Thanks!

there is a thread in here about clusters. read that. they are a nightmare to tear apart. but once you do, you can put LED bulbs in there to make sure they dont go out again anytime soon!

Old thread, I know, and this is my first post here, but I've got the same problem with my 2001 Ranger. Half the speedo area has been out now for years. One night a few months ago all were miraculously lit, I have no idea why, and the next time I turned on the lights they were back to half lit. I think it's a wiring problem. I don't think I can convince hubby to plow through pulling the cluster to figure it out. Oh well, I can see what's important!

I had this problem about a month ago. I had a few burned out bulbs that needed replaced. I ended up replacing all of them, just so I wouldn't have to deal with the others burning out on me. I had the "all were miraculously lit" thing happen with them too one night, but it still ended up being the bulbs. It really wasn't that hard to get to them. It just took some time to take the pieces of the dashboard off to get to them. Just lots of screws and bolts to take out. Anyway, here's the thread that I started when I had this problem:
