Brushed Metal Tailgate Cover

My 95 F150 has the brushed metal tailgate cover. I assume its aluminum. It looks kind of dull. will polishing it make a difference? In the picture it looks decent, but in reality its kinda blotchy, uneven finish.

Mine had a coating over the metal. If you polish it, either use a real light polish to buff the clear coat or remove all of the clear coat and polish the metal. Polishing the metal will take more effort to keep nice, but it will yield the most even results.
