Does anyone know what is needed to bolt an AOD or T-5 to a 460? I looked in the Advance Adapters catalog and did not see anything (maybe I should call them instead).

There are shops that make the AOD handle 500HP. I know the C-6 is a great choice for an automatic, but I want to have an overdrive if I go with an auto. There is a bell housing made for this, but I can't find the source. For the T-5, I can get my hands on one relatively cheaply, and it has a good overdrive ratio. I've also heard of this match-up being done.

The World Class T-5 supposedly handles up to 320 ft/lbs, which I know is not enough for a warmed over 460. But the car is very light and will have a 3.50 rear gear with 27" tires which should not stress the tranny as much.

 

Probably show my ignorance here, but is there an AOD tranny? I have a 94 F250 with 460 that has I think it is E4OD( I may have mixed up the letter sequence). Assuming all you want to do is put a 4 speed OD tranny onto a 460, then I would go with the E4OD. It is a big tranny though so I don't know if it will fit in a car.

Don't know a lot about Fords tranny swapping so my answer may not be helpful.

Yep, AOD's were used behind small blocks in the '80's. I believe Art Carr makes the AOD-460 adapters but they're pricey.

Ok, I'll call Art Carr. Hey - did you know they are now located in Abilene?

BTW, my brother had an AOD specially built from Art Carr in his 351 mustang. The 351 had Trick Flow heads, Vortec supercharger, 36lb. injectors, hot cam, special EFI intake, roller rockers and was Dyno'd at 465HP at the rear wheels.

That is what gave me the idea for the AOD in the first place. I did not think of them for the 460 though.

 

I did call Art Carr, and you are right on two counts..

1) They make it
2) It is pricey - $499 for the plate. The next thing they told me did not make sense. They said i would need their special torque converter and special input shaft that fits the converter. Additional cost is $249 for the shaft and $399 for the converter - Total just over $1,100.

I don't think so. The E40D might be a better deal if it fits in the car.

 

I am swapping a 460 into my Bronco and also was looking for an OD tranny. I currently have an AOD behind my 302 so I thought I may be able to use it but after finding out the price for that adapter, I dropped that idea. I also thought about an E4OD but I'd also have to get a stand-alone computer for that and the E4OD is too long, will kill my driveshaft angle. The only other option is to either get an OD unit such as a Gear Vendors or US Gear unit, $$$, or to regear my axles really high and use a wide-ratio kit in a C6 to compensate for that high gear ratio. I guess I'll just stick with a regular C6 and leave my axle gearing where it's at, 4.56- and just live with it or run even bigger tires than what I have now, 38's.
