I was wondering if any of you guys had heard of anyone putting a diesel engine into a 97-03 Ford 7700GVW pickup. I have a '98 5.4L F-250 LD (7700), 4x4 with E40D trans currently, and love the way the truck rides down the road, but miss the power and torque you get from a diesel. I know the simple solution is to sell my truck, and buy a diesel truck, but wheres the fun in that? I'm a mechanical engineer and like tinkering with things a little too much. I hand built a sandrail dunebuggy, converted a gas chevy to a 6.2L diesel, have made multiple mods to my snowmobiles, so I'm ready for a bigger chanllenge. I'm interested in what you guys think about this, or know if someone has experience. The biggest issue I think is size and weight of a diesel engine vs. the gas 5.4L. Also, outside of the diesel engines used in the big three's pickup trucks, I don't know what other diesel engines exist for a project like this. I think this could be a pretty neat project, time consuming for sure, but I like a good challenge. Thanks for posting your ideas.
You could use a 5 cycl. mercedez diesel that they had in the dodge sprinter vans when benz had control over dodge(they did sell out their ownership didn't they? thought they did, but could be wrong). There are some other diesel, but I can't think of who makes them or what size other then the benz one. For some reason drawing a blank(I hate old age).
No, it was Daimler (they make Mercedes) that owned Chrysler. Diamler sold Chrysler to Cerebus(sp?) management in 2007.
I checked on it, Diamler sold as much of their shares in chrysler that they could to the other company, but they had to retain some, but not enough to equal their controlling interest that they once had.

the five cyl mercedes turbo was a fine engine and I had thought at one time about putting one in a light pickup back when diesel was a lot cheeper
they would be a lot happier in a vehicle around 4000 lb range although could be geared down some to get a little more power
the fuel milage on the two 300s I had wasn't a lot better than an f-150 with a 5.4

What about a Cummins 4BT3.9 litre turbo diesel. It was used in some Ford E350 cube vans. With the Bosh P1700 fuel pump it will produce around 130 HP and 350 FT TQ. The down side is it will only turn 2500 RPMs.

Hmm, there's a couple of options. Does anyone know just how much a power stroke engine weighs, or what a stock 5.4L engine weighs? I'm curious as to how much weight difference there is between them.
I think the 5.4 is round 520 and the powerstroke(atleast the 6.0) is round 1,062.
I thought the 5.4 was around 400, but close enough, but you are also going to have the weight of the intercooler, larger trans cooler, bigger trans and the goodies that go with it, not to mention the room to put all that stuff. I have been pondering this on a 69 Ford and all the other items realy start to add.

I already have an E40D transmission in this truck - came stock. The 150's came with the 4R70W which is considerably less stout. So trans and cooler aren't an issue, but weight and support would be, along with turbo plumbing and an aircharge cooler. Electric fans would help free up some space in the front of the truck, but it would all still be a tight squeeze. Some company in Florida or Georiga squeezed a cummins 5.9 into a ford ranger (with heavy modifications - and it was for drag racing...) so it isn't too far-fetched of an idea to squeeze a diesel into fullsize truck.

Stock they only hit 2500, but modified, you can hit 3200, or even 4200rpm. The power is also easily upped, 250hp for pretty cheap!

If you really want something that is simple, go with the cummins 4BT.. Everyone has done it but for good reason, they fit so good. I know a guy that did it to his 93 or so f150 and he popped the hood and I couldn't believe it. He has no fans on it or anything and it is right up against the firewall, probably a little over a foot from the radiator to the engine. Plus he gets 30mpg and still is able to easily pull skid loaders. I have thought about putting a DT360 in my ford but they seem to be kind of hard to find.

A DT360 is easy to find, it depends on where you look. The ones I see go for around 1500. Try Larry at www.valtruck.com , he's trying to get rid of Ford 6.6's & DT360's because nobody wants em.
