I found a oil pan...will it work?

Can I use a rear sump oil pan off of a 1989 or newer 460 on my 1974 460 bock? It is going into a 1979 4X4 pickup.

Thanks,
Dan

I used an oil pan off a 1984 model truck 460 on my 1976 car 460, the oil pickup tube and the oil pump also bolted right up. I am putting mine in an 81 F150 4x4 and feel as if this will work, I have not put it in yet.

Hope this helps.

79supercab4x4,

Do you know why Ford lists 2 different part numbers for 460 oil pans? (1968-1988 and 1989-end of production) I wonder what the difference is?

Check with Ford Motor Sports. I ordered the pan from them and it came with the pickup, and the bolt you were talking about. Maybe they would sell just the bolt to you.

Dan, sorry i read your post too fast the first time, i actually used an 83 pan on a 73 block. but to answer your question, the bolt pattern is for sure the same and i would think that the shape of the pan is the same too...one thought, could the newer pans have an oil level sensor in the pan? i know a lot of the newer stuff started using those. but like i said, thats just a guess, i have no experience with the 90's big blocks.

oh also, call me a cheap-skate but i didnt bother with the bolt that holds down the pickup tube, i just bent the bracket up a bit so that there was no strain on it as it rested on the flat bolt. of course i checked to make sure it was solid, which it was, and i cant forsee having any problems with it. =)

if you dont feel safe with the pickup not being attatched to the main bolt, just remove one main bolt and weld a 5/16 stud onto it and clean up the weld a bit so the flange of the pickup will fit correctly around it. Just my $.02

Yea, you can use it but you'll need the longer, bolt on rear sump pick-up tube and the truck oil pump. You can get the whole kit from Jegs or Summit Racing. Get the Melling 689-M84DHV oil pump from Jegs and the Ford Motorsports rear sump oil pan kit. Pan kit is $180 and the pump is $75.

Hope this helps

How can a person get a hold of this Ford Motorsports. I am also looking for the pick up tube and sump and the bolt. I have everything else covered.
