Probably one decision you need to make is FWD versus 4WD. If you don't live in an area where snow is an issue, FWD will get a bit better mileage and requires less maintenance. Otherwise, make certain the transmission has been serviced regularly (preferably every 30-40k). These are pretty reliable vehicles. You might also keep an eye on what tires are on the ones you look at. Many owners (including me) complain about the Continental OEM tires being noisy.
One thing to look for is to make sure the TSB on the the stiff throttle has been done. You will know if it hasn't.
My gal has a 04 escape. I pretty nice compact SUV. Rides nice. I would not buy one with the 4 CYL. The 200 hp V6 is adequate. The 4 banger mught seem underpowered to me. But what do I know, I drive a super duty V10 so everything seems underpowered.

IMO they have bad trannies..well ours did anyway..replaced after a couple weeks of driving it new off the lot..Had under 3000 miles when it got towed out of the driveway..
Hey Zach...One daughter has an '05 4 cyl with 40K and has had virtually no issues. We just bought my youngest an '01 (6 cyl) w/ 99K and after 3 weeks it seems to be pretty sound. When I checked the OASIS it had little warranty issues. Looks like they hold value better than expected as well.
In regards, to MPG? I haven't a clue. I just get to pay the gas bill. Not monitor the results...

Front wheel drive will pull the escape through most weather conditions anyway. I would stay with a 2004 model or newer because they were improving some issues about that time.

That's Matt...no doubt because you said that it's supposed to get "wintry" here on Friday...when my flight gets cancelled I know who I'm pointing the finger at.
Thanks for all the help guys.
How is the insurance on it?
Do the tranny problems apply to both autos and manuals?
Little things, how spacious is the inside, how comfortable on highway runs, how much of a PITA is it to change the oil, how is the stock sound system?
