I know some of you must be getting tired of hearing about my 460 in the 78 ford but i am still planning on doing a swap and not sure about a few things.

- First i think i can get my hands on a 71 460 that can replace my 78 460. Now, will i get better power if i change the heads from the 71 with the newer 78 heads witch are low compression? my 78 burns oil, so should i save the hassle of hoping its not the valve seals and keep the 71 stock and put hedders on it? what parts should i change between the engines to gain the most power without tearing into the internals of the engine?

- Finally a quick appraising, a 1971 460 stock, complete, running when came out of car some 5 or so years ago, no guarantees on condition other than owners word, but is said to not burn a drop of oil. now am i stupid to say that he can have an oil burning 78 460, running, and also a 73 460 which needs to be bored out, and a new crank and bearings plus 500 cash? what would the engine be worth knowing this and only wanting to pay cash or trade at least the 78? i want this swap done before june 1 to hopefully hit the three hills car show with more power and less smoke?

thanx for help,,, again.

Okay.. Ill tell ya what.
If you can get your hands on that 71, do it. However, I wouldnt trade him 2 engines AND $500 for it.
My advice, keep the '71 whole, dont change the heads over. your '78 probably has dished pistons in it, which drops the compression ratio. Even though the '71 heads would increase it over stock, the dished pistons would drop it some anyway.
Be careful of an engine that you are not sure of the condition, though. that '71 may well turn out to have bad seals from sitting those 5 years. Before you decide to trade, run a compression test on that '71 engine. If anything less than 130 psi, dont take the trade.
I'd say, depending on the condition of the '71, offer him the $500 OR the 2 engines.. Either way, it's about even.
Good luck!
