Need some help from the experts. I have a 1968 F100 with what I was told was a 429. The camshaft spun a lobe. So, I dig into it and get to looking at the casting number on the heads: D3VE-A2A. So, I trot to my trusty experts on FTE and discover that these are 460 heads. This revelation forces me to assume some really wacked out yoga positions in the wheel well so that I might peer between the frame and the header and get the block casting number: D1VE 6015 A2. Again the experts say 460.

Bottom line:

a. Would some joker rebuild a 460 with 429 crank and pistons?
If so, why?
b. Could said joker be mistaken in thinking he was selling a 429 which in fact was a 460?

What do you guys think?

Heres the story.
The 429 and 460 used the same block, same heads, same manifolds, same everything(unless CJ, SCJ, or Police engines).
The ONLY difference between the 2 were the crank and rods.
Your heads, D3VE, standard 429/460., late model, low compression emissions heads.
Your Block is a standard 429/460 block.
The only way to be sure it is a 460 or a 429 is to look at the crank. The 429 crank will say 4U or 4UA. The 460 crank will say 2Y, 2YA, 2YAB,or 2YABC.
Sure, some "joker" could rebuild a 460 block to a 429... Just to get a 429. Or, vice versa.. someone could turn a 429 into a 460... They are the SAME, except for the crank. Personally, I dont even know why they made the 429 in the first place!
Once again, said "joker" may very well have had a 460 and dint know it. The only way to tell is to check the crank.
Good luck! Hope it's a 460!!

Dont be disappointed if it is "only" a 429. The shorter stroke makes them a higher reving engine, good for racing in light weight chassis. The 460s are better "pullers" with more low end torque.

hi Chopper, just want to correct proud owner on one of his statements. (( the only difference between the 429/460 IS the crank and the pistons )) ... and NOT the crank & rods. just needed to set things straight...
