Unhappy GEM Module programming

Hi. I have a 98 Ford F-150 and I had a leaky windshield a while back, and the dealer said I needed to have the GEM module replaced. I've already taken the old GEM out to look at it and put it back in, so I know how to replace it. But if I buy a new GEM module, does it need to be programmed by the Ford dealer before it can be used? I would hate to take the truck to Ford for them to replace the GEM because they charge an arm and a leg for it , while it's so easy if I just replaced it myself.

Probably not the answer you're looking for, but from my search on the forums it looks like the GEM does need to be programmed for your truck.

I'm thinking as long as you get the correct module it will already be programed for the accessories your truck has.

NO, too many variables. They have a base program and the dealer goes by the vin # to program the proper options.

GEM does not need programming for this application. Be sure to give your parts guy the number off of the old module to get the correct one.
