it's a 5.4l. 55k is believable if he does add a quart with every tank of gas w/ the miles he is putting on. 1k miles in a day- that is a lot. don't know how many miles he gets to a tank, but i would guess ~300. so that's 3 quarts added that day to a 6 quart system.
it's seems a little hard to believe, but you never know.
Call up Ford!!!!!!!!!!!! I just read in a paper a guy in southern WI or Chicago area reported he got 1,000,000 miles on his 87 or 88 chev .

A million miles isn't too terribly impressive...there's that guy with the Volvo with two and a half times that. What's impressive is that it still runs with the way that guy drives it.
