measured MPG pulling a trailer

I have a 2001 SCREW F150 4 x 4 with 3.55 LS rear end and 5.4 motor. Pulled a 1800# car trailer 250 miles empty this weekend, then 250 miles back with a 2000# load on the trailer (3800# total). Got 12 MPG traveling a constant 65 MPH on level state highway. Dont mater if trailer was loaded or not, 12 both ways. Temp was 45 degrees outside. Normally get 15.5 MPG in the winter on the highway (no trailer). Just for information sake.

FYI - my '99 4.6 XL averages 17.6 - 18.2 for the interstate run between Houston and San Antonio, maintaining 70 mph with OD. I recently towed a 3300# trailer & load and averaged 15.5 @ 65 mph without the OD.

My 98 F-150 4.6 4x4 extended cab, 8' box, 100% stock, auto. tranny..... I have about 1500 pds. of constant weight in tool boxes, tools, 200pd. steel rack on top....Even with temps. below 0 degrees all day, another 500pds. of construction mat. on the rack, I still get a solid 12mpg., city, highway. In the summer I average about 14 when really warm. I usually don't drive over 60mph, toggle out OD, if it is jumping in and out a lot. I plug it in if below 0 degrees, I never let it "warm up" much more than a couple minutes. I work outside so I am dressed for the cold. Our youngest comes home from college sometimes, he'll let that car warm up 45 minutes (big sigh)..... I pull his oil every 2500 miles, looks like black licorice..

UPDATE:
I just towed my old 77 F150 from Louisville to Crawfordsville Indiana. About 200 miles each way.
Truck weighs about 4480 and trailer 2500 so roughly 7000lbs. Average speed 75mph. Diving in drive not OD got 9.8mpg.
Coming back with just the trailer (2500lbs) avg. speed 77mph got 13.0mpg.

The best I get with my '99 is 14.5 long distance trip at 65mph average. I was kinda disappointed it did that bad. When plowing snow I usually get 7.5mpg, I do a fair amount of driving between places I plow. In town stop and go I get about 10.5 so far. I have had this truck about 2 weeks now. Its a nice riding truck and has plenty of power. Nothing like my diesel of course but impressive for a little 330 ci engine.

well with my 4.6l and the mods in my sig i would get 13mpg pulling a 4500 boat/trailer at about 70... and with my new untuned 5.4l and pulling the same boat i got 12.5... cant wait to get the motor tuned to actually run worth a darn...

best avg tank to date was when i hauled my race TRX 250r 375 miles for an avg of 18.6... and that was before all my mods... i actually havent tried to get good gas milage since my intake, exhaust and Edge evo... but my stoping it around every cornner and every other chance has yeilded a slight highway use, and trailer MPG of up 1-2 mpg gain, plus the extra power for the fun factor...win win situation
