several 460 questions
Hello group!
I am ready to install a 1974 460 into me 1979 pickup. I bought the motor from a guy that had it rebuilt about 10 years ago, but then wrecked the car and pulled it. It has be in storage since. Everything on the motor looks like new, but i have a few questions.
The motor has a smog pump that pumps air into the back of the heads. I have removed it and all the hoses ect, and plan to tap the holes in the heads and plug them. Is this O.K.?
On the back of the intake, there is a vacuum pot type of thing. It is not plumed to anything. I unbolted it and had a look. theres is a plunger that sticks down into the manifold and pushes up on the shaft of the vacuum pot. What is this and can I remove it?
I want to get this motor up and running on a budget. I am going to run a stock intake(so far). I am wondering if there is much of a difference between a stock car manifold and a stock truck manifold?
Thanks in advance
Dan

First of all, YES, you can plug the air holes in the heads. I used Steel Epoxy Putty, but depending on the tools available, you can tap it and plug it.
That vacuum pot is an EGR valve. Goes down into the manifold and redirects some of the exhaust gasses from the heads back under the carb to get burned again. This you can fabricate a block off plate for out of any steel, iron or aluminum MORE than 1/8 " thick... and use hi-temp goo around it for a good seal.
Also, what kind of carb are you going to put on it?
The manifolds are the same from both the car and truck.... if Im not mistaken. I may be, though, so find another reference !
Any more questions on that particular block, by all means.. post them, or email me at:

The right side (passenger) exhaust manifold is different for the trucks. It has a kickout to clear the frame. If a passenger car manifold is used, the frame will need to be notched, and with the torque of the 460, it will crack at that point. All pickups and vans up to 1987 will have the proper manifold. Drivers sides will interchange.

first of all, save yourself some time and money and try the ford dealer first the last time i checked you can still buy the freeze plug type of plug needed to plug up the egr holes in your heads, if the dealer does not have them then try the local parts stores. then if all else fails then try welding or epoxy them but do that as a last resort. LOL
See, where I come from we dont believe in parts stores... Im 90 miles from the nearest major city, so We just kinda come up with what works... It works!
However, that is correct... There are plugs that tap into the holes for AIR heads, and they do make EGR block off plates... I just couldnt get a hold of either one of them!
