Is Edmunds way off?

I have a line on an 03 Ex Limited 4x4 7.3 with age-appropriate mileage at a dealership. According to Edmunds, the trade in on that truck was $17K or so and the trade in on my 00 Ex Limited 4x2 6.8L is about $8K. So I was thinking that I could get the 03 for a difference of $11 or 12K.

Best deal I could work out was $16k plus my truck. So I passed.

Is Edmunds off, or was I just up against a dealer who didn't want to make a deal?

Just looking at your numbers, I would say the dealer liked his better and just did not want to trade. They will give numbers like that on trades they do not want. The x is not that popular and they are thinking that yours will be tougher to sell. You would be better off selling yours outright and bartering with cash. V10s are taking a pounding due to gas prices.

www.kbb.com to get a good idea on the values. you will almost always lose (on your value) when you trade.

As I think through my options, I may actually do this deal. I am moving back North and will need a 4x4. This truck is super clean and the miles are below 60K. I may ask for the 60K service to be done as part of the deal. That's a tranny flush plus the regular oil change, etc, right?

VaSheriff is gaining momentum as a positive member of FTE.
I think you misunderstand the way dealerships make their money.
They want retail value for their vehicle, while allowing you tradein for your vehicle.
It doesn't work retail to retail, or tradein value to tradein value.
