Question 1997 4.6 swap for a 2005 5.4 possible?

friends:

I have a 97 f150 XLT extended cab 2X4 with a 4.6, anutomatic trans and 81K miles that just gave up on me. The #1 cylinder is not firing and the #2 has little compression. I have lifter tick and very slight lower end knock. Engine runs and will idle though.

A guy down the block has an accident totaled (drivers side) 2005 F150 2X4 with a 5.4 and automatic - runs fine - wants 600 bucks - Is this swap possible? If so, easy or hard? Major modifications required? Is it a bolt right in?

your answers and advice greatly appreciated.

jim

I would say that physically bolting the engine in wouldn't be the hard part. You would also need the wiring, computer, gas pedal assembly, and more from the donor truck. The 5.4 you want is drive by wire throttle. The swap is possible, but nor without a lot of work, IMO.

There are no lifters in a 4.6 SOHC, the cam accuates the valves, no push rods, no lifters, and no rockers. Replacing the coil pack will probably cure the dead #1.

The 5.4 should bolt in, I cant remember if its in the same block family group with the 4.6's, do some research on that one.

The wiring might pose a problem.

Thanks for the good info. I replaced all the plugs, wires, and coil packs. The #1 cylinder is still mis-firing and the #2 has low compression (took actual test). I am leaning towards valve problems or a broken spring, etc.

any thoughts on what to look for? - thanks

I would think that you could do away with the drive by wire, just get an older 5.4 tb that uses the cable. This may require a new program for the computer to delete it, but there's alot of folks doing programs now. Doug at bama chip is really good as he is a ford guru.
