Opinion question...honest opinions please!

Hey fellas, Ive got a 90 F250 7.3IDI and right now I'm nickel and dime'ing it. I love this beast when its running good but I just keep having little things go wrong. Recently I've been looking into the Dodge market for a 24V Cummins. I've heard nothing but good about the Cummins engines. Any of you guys had experience with them? Pros or cons? Any input would be appreciated.

No experience with Dodge, but my '97 7.3-liter DIT PSD is a fantastic motor.

from what I've seen in my shop you can't make as much power with a 12 valve vs the 24 valve but the 12 has far fewer problems.they've been around long enough to prove there worth. just my .02 worth

From what I've seen you can make much more power witha 12v than a 24v but both are rock solid motors but from what I've hear the trucks they are put in aren't quite as solid. I know they have big problems withe there auto trans untill you get to the common rails. But from the research I did when i bought my truck the motors are good for 500,000+ miles but the trucks are only good for about 200,000 miles but no first hand expirence with that. The 5 and 6 speeds behind the cummins are rock solid though.

I have a Cummins (85) and I have a Powerstroke (06) Love the Cummins motor and manual 5 speed, hate the dodge truck. The Powerstroke is OK, but I love the Ford truck. Wish the Ford came with the new Cummins motor.....that would be a winning combination.

mnmwhit sounds to me like you have exactly what you want put the motor and trans from the dodge in the ford! I want to get a 94-98 12v to build up for when my IDI fineally blows with slightly over 215,000 miles on my IDI I should have plenty of time to build the motor and gather parts for the swap. The IDI 7.3 Factory turbo is a great motor and has plenty of power for what I tow but I don't have nearly enough projects!

BTW gassgrunt whats nickle and dimen you so bad on the IDI For about a grand you can replace injectors, return line and caps, IP and have money left for any other litle stuff. And it'll run like bran new Just depends what you're having problems with I guess would be intrested to know what problems you've been having. But I'm also sure you'd be happy with the cummins motor too.

I wouldn't want to swap in a 24V purely for having to deal with swapping over all the electronic garbage.

I have only heard good things about the 5.9 and many have ALOT of miles on them. I just cant stand the dodge suspension, frame, trans, and plastic interior. The cummins is a VERY solid motor.

I have never owned or been around many dodges with the cummins. we do have about 3 dresser motor graders with 5.9 cummins in them. One has 8000 hours on it and we have not had a whole lot of problems out of it. Im sure there is some kind of difference between the 2, but as far as i can tell the cummins is pretty solid.
