Question Raw Fuel Smell when Idleing

I have a 2005 Expedition with the 5.4 Triton , just recently I am getting a huge drop in fuel economy and also noticed a Raw fuel smell when I am idleing , checked for any pooling or wet spots of fuel but none found. Anyone else experiencing the same problems???? Don't know if it is coinsidence or not but I just recieved a letter from Ford about Faulty Fuel Injectors ??? . No check engine light or rough idleing??? HELP!!!

A faulty fuel injector sounds like exactly what it could be. Get it in to the dealer and get it checked.

BTW, welcome to

Welcome to the forum

I have seen a bad injector driver in the pcm stick open and cause raw fuel to spray into a cylinder. It will miss though. You may just have a vapro recoverly line off or something. No check engine light?

No check engine light has come on ?? , the engine seems to run and idle fine but can't figure out why the drop in fuel economy and the smell . I was hoping to do some investigating on this before sending it in to the dealership . Not that it isn't worth it but $95.00 a Hr to tell me nothings wrong ?. I would rather do some reserch with people who have had simalar problems and do my own troubleshooting for now!!!.

Time for some maintenance suggestions. O2 sensors will cause rich conditions, perhaps a dirty MAF, Exhaust leak, ect. Rule out the simple stuff first.

Raw Fuel Smell

Yes , I smell raw fuel coming thru the vents , especially if the vehicle is idleing , warming up in the morning, or sitting for 3-5 min ideling . once the vehicle is travelling it seems to stop . Someone had mentioned that the charcoal canister gets saturated and can cause the purge valve to stay open ??? . no way to check this unless I take it in to someone with the proper diagnostic tools. Any other suggestions before taking it in?.

My dad just had that problem with his car, it was a loose hose on the engine. He said it wasnt making puddles that he could see. But the smell of raw gas would come through the vents when he was sitting at a light or stop sign. sounds sort of like what you have going on. best of luck.

Any noises like an exhaust leak at the exhaust manifold? Common for studs to break off.

Mrose, I'd take it in. If it's an injector(sounds very possible) and it's sticks open, it can and will really muck up you engine. Being it's an 05' I wouldn't take the chance.

I had the schrader valve (fuel test port) on the fuel rail start leaking on mine. Smelled, no puddles, but was leaking like a fountain. This happened to be after a plug ejected. But you might pull the cap and check. Any other connection in the fuel system could give similar results.

A bad injector should be noticable at the tailpipe. Leaking fuel will only be up front. Either way, taking it in is sound advise.
