Exhaust back pressure valve

yes it on the driver side of the engine near the front. should be just rearward of your boost tube for the intake elbow, and maybe 8" below it.
easiest way i can describe finding is this:
there is a small (1/4" roughly) hard line threaded into the very top/very front of the driver side exhaust manifold. find this and follow it up (less than a foot long). the other end of that is where the EBP sensor is located, and it has an electrical connection on the very top of it. it looks like an oil pressure sending unit.
oops, i just noticed you are looking for an EBP "valve" , not "sensor" , sorry.
not sure about that little bugger, i seem to remember hearing somewhere that the 7.3 had one of those, but the 6.0 didn't ?? i could be wrong though, it's happened before.

sounds to me like he meant the EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve, which you most certainly do have. if you are standing at the front of your truck looking toward the engine, the EGR valve is located directly behind the intake elbow. it's about 4" high, has an electrical connection on the very top of it, and is bolted to the intake manifold w/two bolts via "ears" that stick out the valve body.
there are many threads on how to remove/clean these things.
if it actually does need to be replaced, you can have it done under warranty if you still have one. even if you're out of warranty, you have a 100,000mile warranty on the motor just pay a 100dollar deductible.
05 means you can't simply unplug it because you will get a check engine light, but you can get an sct and program it to leave the valve closed to prevent any further "gunking" of the thing.
you can also pull it and clean it yourself and put it back in .

Has anybody taken this out and cleaned it versus replacement???

yeah, i tried to clean mine, and i think that is what screwed it up.. mine was corroded, and i cleaned it with brake cleaner in november, i have ordered a new one but it's not here yet, and i believe that it is the reason for my surging issues.

Thanks Danny. I think these types of issues are going to gain in popularity as more of us keep our trucks longer. I was ready to spend $2,300 on a new turbo and now find out that I can maybe fix this for almost nothing. I never knew that between the dirty turbo and the plugged exhaust back pressure sensor many problems arise.

As I recall, The tube needs to be replaced with the sensor. The sensor should be covered by the 5 year 100k emissions warranty. Maybe a tech will chime in. I would also just check the wire connection to the sensor. Make sure it is seated properly.
