I need the Pre-72 timing gear for a 460, Help!!!
I'm about to put an after market cam into my 460.
The Cam instructions suggest a Pre-72 Cam shaft drive gear, the one on the Crankshaft.
They must be talking about a 429 because the 460 started in 72.
Does anybody know the Part number for this gear?
What do I have to do to get one?

Well, I don't know the part number, but I do know that I have a 460 block from a '69 lincoln. So you might call a local parts store, and tell them its for a 1969 lincoln somethin-or-other, then see if they have it. All of the lincoln cars came with the 460, just tell them its from a mark 3. Hope I could help

Check with the cam manufacturer. I'll bet they just want the cam installed "straight up". The 1972 and newer crank timing sprockets from Ford have 4 degrees of (advance? or retard?) built in. If you buy and aftermarket timing chain (and gears) they can be installed straight up (they usually have a few keyways with different offsets). So I don't think you need to find a 30 year old part.

Thanks Fordman and Bronco for the super fast replies.
I just did finish my Post before a Thunder and Lightening show came along. I umpluged my PC stuff and crawled under the Bed with the Dog.
I called Summit Racing's tech line and asked about the Asterisk Blurb in the Cam instructions.
He didn't know who made the Cam, or anything about part numbers. Dead end there.
I heard Crane was the Cam grinder for summits stock cams, so I called Crane. Same kind of a Response. More dead ends.
Taking Fordmans idea, I called AutoZone and sure enough the two gears are a different number.
I ordered one for a 69 Lincoln. I'll have the engine togather in three weeks or so.
Look for the "End of the Story" sometime in October.
The Difference in the Pre-72 gears and the Post-72 gears is the relationship of the Keyway to the Marked tooth. On the Older gears the Keyway is right over top of the marked tooth, and on the 8 degree Retarded gear the Keyway is aligned just a little off to the left of the Marked tooth.
I'll catch a Salmon and a Halibut in your names.
