That's pretty awful if he's getting that kind of fuel economy, and it makes me wonder what he's doing.
I marketed myself primarily on eBay and through word of mouth. Once people know you're doing this and you build up a reputation, they'll start telling other people. And folks who have cars hauled frequently know other folks who need to have cars hauled. The income isn't steady (as with any freelancing job) and it's not guaranteed. The reality is the income isn't steady in any business, it's just that when you're an employee of the business then the business acts as a damper and pays you anyway. When you ARE the business, the only damper is your savings account.
Ive always seen them on ebay. But are their other places that people market at? Like sites like autotradet, etc.
this is the video that made me think about hotshottin. I wonder how he gets all of his customers. The reason why i say that is because all of his work is to companys and it doesnt seem like he travels far. But i could be wrong
Cash flow!! I typically ran 3000+ miles a week when I was on the road. Rates ranged from 1 to 2 dollars a mile, but fuel was only 1.75 (and I remember complaining about that) So I had the ability to 12 to 20k a month, but the cost are what kill a guy. I had to run at least 2.5 weeks to cover my overhead, so I had a week and a half to make a profit. I enjoyed it when I used my pickup, but I "upgraded" to IH 4700lp and my operating cost went up making it harder to break even. When I quit I was running 3 hard weeks to cover my overhead and it just wasnt worth it.
If you really want to make money trucking become a broker!!!

I will say if you can get in with the oil field guys there is good money. I know a guy that does that out of Casper, WY. He is on call 24/7, but the money is good.

Was it as good as the money you where making with ur business?
A broker is a middle man that finds the loads and matches them with trucks. I had a couple I could call when needed. When I first started I used Internet Truckstop and DAT. both are load boards. Brokers and shippers list loads available. After you get the hang of it finding your own loads is not hard. Some people actually use a broker to find all the loads for them, this seems to work if the broker has a good regular haul, but I know of a few guys that had brokers just getting them loads off the same boards I was finding them on. The only difference was they were taking an additional cut off the rate, so I was making more$ finding my own.
Doing it the way I did works ok, but if you can get a contract haul for an oil company or the like it is always better due to the fact that it is steady and fairly local.
I just thought of another option. RV transport. here is a link to a company that I use to see alot. They seem to pay decent. The advantage is you are leasing on to them and dont have to find your loads or mess with fuel reporting.
