Cost of Replacing Torque Converter

I have brought this up before but really have not nailed down a potential cost. I have a 1999 F250 7.3 2WD 64,000 miles. It Rattles......But the trans is fine. I have been thinking of replacing the TC just to quiet the truck down a little. Some have told me just to run it... Any ideas of what it would cost parts and labor to replace the TC? I dont need a high performance TC Just something that does not rattle. Maybe even OEM?

well

Different areas have different prices.
Call around to a local dealer or service depot.

I have the same problem in a serivce van with the same transmission.

We did a complete oil change, torque converter and pan with Red Line ATF and the prolem went away. You must drain the torque converter, there is a drain plug you can get to through the inspection window on the bottom of the bell housing.
The van started doing this at 100k miles, and stopped with the change.
After about 20 thousand miles the chatter will come back and we change the oil and it goes away again. We have been going like this for 120 thousand miles.(van and original trans have 220k miles)
Oil changes are expensive: 12 qts @ 6-7 bucks a quart.
Good luck it worked for me.

Torque converter pressure plate rattles in Ford Diesel converters are not uncommon. We used to get reman converters occasionally that did this from the very first startup. It doesn't seem to hurt anything but the dang things ring like a bell at idle and whenever unlocked.

A reman converter from Ford is about $250 wholesale. Probably in the $300 range retail. (although I haven't priced them since I sold my shop three years ago)

R&R labor on the transmission is about 3 hours and your local shop rate can vary from $70 to $120 /hr. Then add two gallons of fluid to that total.

We typically got $500 to put a converter in a typicaly 2wd ford diesel.

For $550 I would do it... I may have to check around for a local shop. Would be nice not to have to shout when standing next to my truck..
