bad vibrations - parking brake

2004, F150, Extended Cab, 22k.

I have scoured this forum, as well as others, but still need help with my vibration problem.

The symptoms fit the case where the parking brake is dragging or stuck.

I could not find a TSB on this forum but on another it was listed as #18560. This number system does not match what is listed here.

I am looking for the full text of the TSB or, failing that, the part number of the new lever arms for the parking brake.

As a side note, before the warranty expired, the dealder rebuilt the differential with new ring and pinion trying to solve this issue. While that may sound good, it was a complete miss as far as the diagnosis is concerned. Furthermore, they did not replace the clutch pack based on TSB 06-4-4.

In one sense, now that the warranty has expired, I am glad not to have to deal with the dealer anymore. I have never had a good experience with them.

thanks in advance

rick

there are several known issues: I am not sure how many apply to your model year but Here is what I have found:

clutch pack in ls differential
parking brake dragging
pinion angle
drive shaft

of course there are also the standard tire and wheel balance.

Good luck!

I have an '04 150, same problem at 31K. Slight ticking at first, developing into a wild thumping as I rolled down the road. I finally got out, reached behind each wheel and wiggled each E brake lever back and forth, and drove home.

Everytime I put the E brake on and drove away, without wiggling the levers, the same thing would happen, violent E-brake thumping.

Went to the dealer, he put a new "Lever cam-Parking part number #6L3Z-2A637-AR on the right rear E-brake, serviced both sides. Said it was rusted or something, and it works like new. I might check this myself once a year from now on. The lever cost 24.20, labor was 195.00. He also re-ground the from rotors, kept the same pads.

I'm satisfied.

I just did this myself a month ago. The rear passenger side e-brake parking levers were siezed up. No need to buy new ones though. Just break them apart. Then I used a wire grinder wheel to get all the junk off them. Greased them up and put everything back together. I did the driver's side levers too (cleaned and greased them) although they weren't siezed yet. Looks like I saved myself $220 doing it myself.

Thanks for the part number. That is exactly what I need.

I know I could clean up what is installed but since a TSB has been issued, I want to do the job just once.

I would still like the TSB number if anyone has it.

I wanted to do the job myself too, but it's too damn cold outside, -18 F this morning, but in the future, keep an eye on that E-brake. Funny thing, I had always used the E-brake thinking that in using it, it would remain free and in working order. Now I'm afraid to set it thinking I'll have to jump out and wiggle the levers!

the weather is what kept me from diving in but not near as cold as that. It did get above freezing today.

Can you reach the levers without removing the wheel?

I have never had the wheel off or even seen it off.

you can reach around and feel for the cable and see if it moves back or forth or not.

But you have to take off the rear rotors in order to get to the levers. Check out this post, near the bottom "SuperCrewDude" posted another link that has pictures:

Yes, rmccoll. When it first happened and I heard the bumping, thumping, shaking, not knowing WTH was happening, I was close to home, drove straight into the garage, hopped out and smelled brake linings.

Felt the discs through the wheels and the left rear seemed the hottest. I got back in, took off and when it start up again I pulled over, reached around the tire, felt for the E-brake cable, followed it back to the lever that goes into the back of the internal E-brake drum and wiggled and pushed it backwards as the cable would release.

I did both sides to be safe, and took off, and nothing! Drove perfect, until, I forgot, pushed the E-brake the next time I stopped. And of course the same thing happened, bump-bump-bump-thump-thump-thump. So, to the dealer I went with what I thought was the problem. The rest is history.

I had been told other possible problems from the LS rear end clutches to the drive shaft spines u-joints etc. by friends. The only things I have fixed is a new heater motor, under warranty, and this E-brake problem. Oh, and I popped in a Ford CD player that I bought on E-bay for 60 bucks.

thanks for all the info. What could have been major has turned into not so major. Once it warms up I'll take them off and clean and see if I need new ones. In the mean time, I just won't set the ebrake.

I really appreciate the advice. It makes a job much simpler if you know what you have before you start disassembly.

Thanks again
