$600 for part of rear window?

Hey Guys-

Luckily for me, I'm posting this for a friend at work. He has an '05 F-150 with the sliding glass in the rear window (manual). He was hauling some stuff and broke one of the panels of glass to the side of the part of the window that slides, the part right behind the passenger's head.

For this little window, it will be $600 to replace. That sounds high to me. Is that right?

Thanks-

PC

Sounds like the whole rear window assembly to me. Has he tried the junk yards?

He hasn't tried junk yards. Can you get a window there and have someone install it?

I would think most any body shop would have experience with that.

Shop around. dont just go to the dealer. Try your local glass shop. A glass shop might sell you an after market replacement alot cheaper. Glass chops usually come to you and fix it. I had a windsheild replaced once and they came to where I work and fixed it in the parking lot then mailed me the bill.

$600 should be the whole window assembly. I had an older F150 and the rear window leaks whenever it was raining hard. Dealer tried to fix it several times but not successful. Finally the whole window was replaced under "good will" warranty but told me that it cost them $600.

Just for giggles call your local Ford dealer and tell them you want to put a rear sliding window on the truck (422b30 base number IIRC) don't tell them it already has one. I've seen assemblys cost less than components on more than one occasion.

Thanks for the info, guys. I think he did try a glass shop. Maybe that's where he went first.

They are easy to replace. They are bolted in and sealed (with some black sticky crap). I have a solid rear window I kept from mine when I bought it new. It was taken out by Ford. I will sell it to him if he is in need.

Check your insurance card. Breakage of glass is usually covered under comprehensive coverage if you have it, and if so what is your deductible?

It is at least worth taking a look.
