429 or 460 in 79 4x4

I know its long. What makes a 429 different from a 460? Which is an over all better engine? I would like an engine that performs well on street and off. Is it possible to make a 429 out of a 460? Which gets better mileage? I have the oppurtunity to get a free 460 from a friend already pulled. The heads and intake are off and there is no carb, and the piston is broken. I plan on building it with edelbrock components, water pump heads intake carb, and msd ignition system. I will be putting it into my 79 f150 4x4 xlt. The truck has a four inch lift, is that enough to clear the axle? I will be putting a jet or b&m c6 behind it. Do the location of the motor mounts cause a need for different driveshafts? Will I be able to mount my air conditioning compressor on the engine or do I need l&ls brackets? Also is there any way I could get a cruise (big vacuum thing conected to carb linkage) off of a lincoln or will mine bolt up with some fabrication. Will the cruise thing hook up to an edelbrock carb? What needs to be done to the block and crank? Honed and polished? and what are some good pistons and rods? I want to be able to run 91 or less octane and I live in a non emissions state. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

LAST EDITED ON 16-Oct-01 AT 00:39 AM (EST)[p]Externally, their is NO difference between a 429 & 460. The only difference is crank & pistons. They make up for increased displacement. They are both good motors, but if you want pulling power, I'd go with a 460. The 460 will take very well to what you plan on doing to it. They are very good long lasting motors. I'm sure that you'll be able to hook your existing cruise control box with some fabrication. You should be able to hook it up to the Edelbrock Carburetor.

I run an Edlebrock 750 on the 460 in my '82 Bronco (F-150 frame) and the factory cruise control works fine. I do use the throttle cable from an F-250.
