Need advice- used F250 buyer

Hello, I am new to the forum and I am sure there are threads that already address this.

I am in the market for a F250 for towing my horse trailer. After talking to horse owners, everyone is recommending that I pass up the 150 and go straight for a diesel- and that I won't be dissapointed. My budget right now is about 18k max, but would really prefer to spend less to not have all the bells and whistles in exchange for a safe, reliable confortable truck.

What are the years I shoud stay away from? What years are the best? What are the biggest issues I should be aware of? Are extended warranties recommended? Can I safely purchase a truck via private sale?

I will really appreciate responses- even if they are to direct me to a previous thread where these questions are answered.

Cherie

Lots of variables, but if you're getting a 6.0, I'd say you should get an '05 or later. If you're looking at the 7.3, they're all pretty solid.

2WD will be less expensive than 4WD... if you're getting a 4WD, I'd recommend avoiding the "Shift-on-the-Fly", and get one with manual hubs and transfer case.... fewer problems in the long run.

I'm also a believer in the 6-speed manual trans rather than the automatic..... your choice, though.

if your budget is 18K, you might be in the range of the 7.3. that is a very dependable engine there, so just look over the truck for other problems. Browse the 7.3 forums to see what some of the typical problems are with those trucks. Good luck

the 6.0 PSD have EGR problems, but that is mostly in the earlier years...go for '05-'07. You will be able to tow A LOT more than you would be able to with a 150, but remember your going to be paying A LOT more for fuel also. I used to have a 150, but traded it in for a 250 PSD b/c the 150 couldn't handle the towing. I would get an OASIS report for what ever truck you are looking at buying. If you see that it hasn't really had any problems, go ahead and get it, and don't worry about the extended warranty. You should be safe going with a private sale, as long as you get the VIN number and run an OASIS report, that way you know the truck isn't a lemon. If you have anymore quesitons, PM me

By all means, come on over to the diesel thread section. Also, check out this site:

http://pages.prodigy.net/stevebaz/_i...az/index3.html

Do a search on "Buying" and it'll take you right to some good info. It's towards the top, but will take a bit of scrolling down to find the info. The search might be quicker.
