should i get this engine?

hey, all...i found a 429/460 today....here's what i know:
it is in a 69 continental, and the head casting #s are C9VE-A...the only reference i've found is tom monroes BS book about ford engines....and it says they are 73.5 cc, 2.24/1.725 heads...and in his chart under 429CJ, SCJ, and Police....true???if so, would the engine most likely be a 429 or did they put those heads on 460s as well???
and here's the dilemma: i am building my 460, and have gotten speed-pro hypereutectic pistons .030, which advertise 9.14:1 with 92 cc chambers....i need heads for it...was going to go with D2VE heads to be more tame and use 87 octane....i figure the C9VEs will give me about 10.5 or 11:1????how high of octane will i need if i do that???or should i get the engine to build up for a racer??oh...i can get it for around 200 bucks....

I have those exact same heads in my 429CJ ( It's relative to the date)ONLY.After a specific date they used Adjustable valves.
The octane required for that engine is 98 octane to make it run it's very best on pump gas.
I have noticed an improvement over 91(now the norm) when I'm using 95 Octane.
Yes the ratio goes up to 10.5 > 11:1 with those heads.

I like the way my truck performs pulling my trailer,
Lots of torque ,Lots of power, and great gas mileage.

First of all.. the C9VE casting number is good.. it's a high-compression, large-valve head. For a cheap performance head, it's adequate.
Second, it did come off a 460. the 3rd digit in the casting, "V", indicates that it is a Lincoln head.. Lincolns never used the 429, only the 460 in their vehicles..
Third, Yes.. Take the engine if you can afford it.. they make great pulling motors or performance motors, for relatively cheap.
As always, have fun...

Once more, sorry.. Went through and read your post more thoroughly..
With the more than 9 to 1 compression advertised with a 92cc head (with your SpeedPro pistons), you will be way over 11:1 with these heads. you would not be able to run this engine on the street with those heads, that is unless you can afford to fill up with AVgas locally lol. Sure, this engine would be a great racing engine.. with those pistons, the C9VE heads, a good stiff cam, and some bottom-end work.. hot, hot, hot... I'd say get the engine, since it's so cheap (I wish I could find one like that for $200..) and work with it..
Have fun.

Those heads do not have the big valves. They have 2.08 intakes and 1.66 exhaust. I have a set on the bench right now.

Nathan's correct, those are not CJ valved heads. I like and use Tom Monroe's book but there are a couple of mistakes in the references. He never did give the correct casting number for CJ heads.

And the '72 PI head w/studs/guideplates casting number is also missing from his reference, even though he mentions it in the text with an incorrect description of valve sizes. It has smaller valves and manifold ports.

Don't get me wrong, I still think it's the best 385 series book I've ever found. Even factory manuals have correction supplements.

If the price is right, I'd still latch on to any pre '72 heads. The enviro ***** are closing all smaller boneyards that don't have the bucks to conform and all that stuff is going to the crushers. I'm already seeing bare, untouched early heads going for $300. And cast iron CJs needing valve seat inserts are well over $600. I can buy new LS1 heads for that price.

hey Mil1ion, did you say that you are using C9VE-A heads on your motor and you said that they are the same as 429 C.J. ????????????????????????????? ... if this is true i hate to tell ya you don't know much about fords!! the C.J. head has the casting number D00E-R ((( ONLY ))) that's it no other substitute. sorry to burst your bubble but can't let mis information go like this, to many people are not that familiar with true part numbers.
