I was wanting to know if anyone has used the Comp Cams. 252 or the 260 High Energy Cam in their 460? I was on their web-site looking around and these seemed like a decent choice of camshaft for a stock 460.

I installed a Comp 268 cam in a 1978 F250 w/460 and it was too much cam for an auotmatic with a 3:55 rear gear...you'd just be getting into the powerband when the trans would shift. In high gear you'd need to be around 70-75 MPH to be in the low end of the powerband, which is faster than most of us normally drive. I would have been better off with the 260 cam. If you have a stick and a 4:11 gear with stock tire size than the 268 maybe the way to go. As far as the Comp 252 cam goes their catolouge recommends it for a "medium size engine" (300"-350"). I've got a 268H in a F-150 with 3.25 gears and a C6 with a stock converter. It's just fine. My engine is no where near stock, but the power is there from idle to out past 5000. My C6 shifts when the tach hits about 5200 now. Because tachs lag a little, the engine is probably turning 5300-5350. Contrary to popular belief, you CAN adjust WOT shifts with an adjustable vacuum modulator. I did.

had one in the "first" 460...it was ok, I mean I thought it was kind of dead all the way across the powerband, but that might've been because it was 7.9:1 compression. I guess it depends on what else has been done to the engine, like headers, intake, carb, compression ratio, etc, etc. If you havent figured it out, 460's love lots of cam/carb/big headers. There's a lot of cubic inches to feed, but if you have an otherwise stock engine, the 260 should be make pretty nice torque.

 

My best friends dad (a hardcore ford nut for sure ) ran the HE260 in a '73 429 in his '78 F-150. The engine was .040 over with flat tops (right at 9.0-1)...otherwise bone stock for a '73 429 other than the dual 2 1/4" exhaust. 2.75 gears, 235/75/15's, and a shift kit. Very smooth idle, instant throttle response, but it didnt feel much stronger than with the stock cam. It did get 2 mpg better economy though according to him.
