Exhaust leak - 97 F350

Hello folks,
Have what I think to be an exhaust leak. That ticking sound, and is coming from the drive side when pulling or going up hill. Let me apologize up front, I certainly don't claim to be a mechanic so hope I at least have the terminology correct. Been tracing through the forum posts and seemed like looking for soot would be the first step to hopefully track down the issue. What I 'think' I found is soot in the area in which the up pipes connect to the exhaust manifold. Right in the area in which they connect, which makes me think there is a gasket that is leaking. Hope I've explained correctly, and if so, is that a fairly common problem with these diesels?

Thank you.

Their is no gasket between the block and mainfold. What usally happens is a bolt breaks in the mainfold causing the tick and leak. Check the manifold for broke bolts.

yep where there is soot there is a leak. Could be the mainfold like Itfox said or the could just be the up-pipe joint. those bolts can rust out or loosen up and cause a leak as well. New bolts should fix that up.
