I need some basic help for fixing a 460.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 26-Nov-01 AT 09:14 PM (EST)]1978 Lincoln Towncar with 460 (AC/multiple belts)
So I was driving at fairly high RPM. And I start hearing a clatter. I pop the hood and steam comes out. I go and buy some distilled water and pour it in the radiator and it leaks out on the ground. I have it towed home.
Here is what I know is broken:
Belt to alternator. (Gone)
Fan pulley is really, really loose. It needs to be replaced. Fan and fan clutch are fine (fan scraped the housing and is now quite sharp)
There is a hole (I think) in the radiator hose or some cooling hose near the crankshaft pulley. I think this because when I pour water in it seems to leak out from there. But I know there is a hole near the bottom of the engine because all of the water poured in came out.
What I've done is take off all the belts except for the one that goes from the crank to something on the left. And removed the fan and fan clutch. So the bad pulley has no belts on it. I started up the engine and it starts and runs fine. When I pour water in while the engine is running it sprays everywhere, the spray comes from the crankshaft pulley. Specifically the center groove for a belt is all wet and throwing water.
I need help with:
How to I replace this bad pulley.
Any advice or guesses on the coolant leak.
Thanks guys.

The Water PUMP area Is My guess.
Some of your explaination to me is vague but I'll try and help.
Water Pump !
It isn't that bad a fix.
If you need instruction I can provide them if you want.
That thing on the left, If it has a pulley with some 1" hoses coming out of it ,is probably the air pump for the emission controls.
If you need want the instructions in Jpeg form.

Thanks, I'll have to find out exactly what is leaking before I'll know about the water pump.
The problem I now have is that the water pump pulley (the fan is attached to this one) is shot. I need to replace it (I don't think I can fix it.) Ford doesn't make these pulleys for the 75'-78' 460's anymore. So aside from a junkyard does anyone know a place that would sell old stuff like that.
Otherwise I'll need to convert everything to a serptine belt system. Does anyone know how to do that?

What exactly do you mean when you say the pully is loose? i think your problem is probably the water pump itself as was said earlier, and not the pulley. also, if theres that much wear in the shaft\bearings of the pump that it wobbles around, theres a really good chance that thats where your leak is coming from too. a new pump is fairly cheap and pretty easy to replace. id say go for that.

The pulley itself just slides over the water pump NOSE and bolts to the flange with the fan spacer or a clutch fan.
