360 to 460 change over.. in a 73 F-250 3/4 ton 4x4

This is very new to me.. and I know it can be done.. I was curious if anyone out there knows whats involved. Do i need to change motor mounts, transmission mounts ??? I am changing from my old 360, new process 435 to a 460 with C-6 tranny. I have found a donor vehicle that I will be pulling it out of.. Its a 75 Mercury Marquis. Are the truck motors different than the car motors? I am just curious as to what needs to be done beofre thsi will bolt up under my hood.. Also, I should mention the only thing 73 on my truck is all the running gear.. The body is a 1949 F-1..Any help would be appreciated. I have posted this in another forum but got no responses.. thanks guys..

The motor is the same. The transmission will probably give you fits. I think you will need to get a c-6 tranny that will bolt up to the transfer case. I'm not sure though, I don't deal much with 4x4.

Need mounts, manifolds or headers I think L&L has this stuff.

the car mounts will not work you need truck mounts, these are readly avalible from any mid 70s 460 powered pickup the same for exhaust manifolds. You will need to take the frame ears and rubber mounts also need to get a set of block mounts as i do not think they are the same as the car block mounts but I could be wrong about the block mounts

Looks like I need to give more info.. I plan on using the 460 and the C-6 tranny thats in the car and dropping into the truck. I was mainly curious as to what needs to be changed. I have a divorced transfer case.. So I know that will not be an issue.. I know the drive line between tranny and trasfer case will have to be modified as well as transfer case shifter mount will need to be made. I may try and use the power steering and power booster our of this vehicle as well.. But, thats another discussion.. One step at a time right.. My main focus was what mounts need to be changed and so forth.. thanks again.

My best advice would be to invest in a set of mounts specifically made for that transfer.. They are relatively inexpensive, and there are a number of lines who carry such mounts. I feel that it is well worth the small price to avoid not only investing more money in something that may not work, but also to save all the time and effort! I mean, isnt it easier to drop something in and bolt it up? Uh huhh.
As for tranny mounts, I just ran a couple pieces of angle iron and bolted it up w/Grade8 bolts, drilled the proper holes at the proper intervals, and bolted right in.. It should work the same for a truck, because Im SURE you have more room to work under there than I did!
Best of luck..post back if any more qs.

Post 360 to 460 change over.. in a 73 F-250 3/4 ton 4x4

I've done this swap,(two wheel drive). It wasn't realy that hard. It's been about 8 years ago so forgive me if I don't rember everything. I used a 73 ltd station wagon for a doner, and the original in the pick up was a 390. The mounts on the truck frame and on the motor are different. I modified what was there and had no problems. I don't remember having to change exhaust manifolds, and can't think of a reason to do so. You will however have to have the portion of you exhaust from the manifold to the muffler built to fit the new motor. I recomend going to headers, (stock 460 exhaust manifolds are terrible about cracking, TRY TO FIND THEM IN A WRECKING YARD! HA). You will also need a new radiator shroud because the 460 sits farther forward, and that puts the fan in the radiator. This problem might be solved if you actually purchase the right motor mounts. I had to machine my fan spacer down to get it out of the radiator, worked fine. The trans is easy. There are factory holes in the frame. take the cross member off, and move it to the new holes. This may be rivited, so you may need to grind the rivits off to remove the cross member. This worked well for me, however this may change with the right motor mounts also, (I don't know what the 460 mounts do to the position front to back as compared to modified 390 mounts. As I recall these were the only issues. Even the carb, and trans linkage bolted right up. Good luck.

I did this on a '72 F250 4x4. I used a set of T Bird mounts (I think) and turned them upside down. I dont remember the year, as it's been a few years. There is a guy at the Ford dealer in COlorado springs (Phil Long Ford Truck Center) that does this all the time and can give you all the info if you want to make a call. I think the number is 719-575-7801. I didnt use headers, as the stock manifolds worked fine. I did have a custom exhaust made from there back, however. NOw Im looking for more power also.

Best.
