460 EFI changes over the years

I have a 1990 460 F350 5spd
As I understand it around 79 the crank changed in 460s (ballance issue).
Then with EFI the heads changes.
What happedned around 3/89. PAW catalog says their short and long blocks are only good thru 3/89.

Also if I go to salvage yards looking for a used EFI engine which ones will work with my 1990 truck/computer.

Does auto vs 5spd matter when looking for a used engine or does it just take a pilot bushing and the old flywheel bolted to the new engine.

Are the later modle efi 460s different if so how.

thanks

460 EFI changes over the years

There were major changes in 93. These split the engines into 88-92 and 93-97 groupings.

Beyond that, there were a lot of running changes in "soft" parts. I couldn't find my Felpro gasket notes. I could pull the same info from genuine Ford data, but that would take a few hours.

Some of the "soft/softer" part changes:
Valve stem seals
Oil pan gasket
Piston rings (I think) and thus pistons
Head gaskets (I think)
Valve cover gaskets
Fuel injectors (I think they are compatible)
Fuel rails
TFI-IV module
Plug wires
A/C delete idler pulley bracket

460 EFI changes over the years

I found my Felpro gasket notes. This data is for light truck 460's (nominally 73 to 98), car applications aren't counted.

Head gasket: 73 - 6/28/85, 6/28/85 - 98
Intake gasket(s): 73 - 74, 74 - 87, 88 - 98
Exhaust manifold gasket: 73 - 87 (oval), 88 - 89 (large irregular), 90 - 92 (small irregular), 93 - 98 (large irregular)
Valve cover gasket: 73 - 87, 88 - 94, 95 - 98
Valve stem seals: 73 - 2/20/86, 2/20/86 - 2/14/92, 2/14/92 - 98
Oil pan gasket(s): 73 - 3/30/89, 3/30/89 - 94, 95 - 98
Timing cover gasket: 73 - 3/11/85, 3/11/85 - 94, 95 - 98

The parts being sealed by gaskets often didn't change when the gaskets did. This implies that the newer gaskets could be substituted for older ones.

So, to answer your question about what changed in March 89, the oil pan gasket changed.

Ludis,
Do you or others know if there was a change in the heads between 6/28/85 and later or was it just the gaskets? Would a 85 block be able to be used with '87 heads using the later gaskets?
Thanks,
Tony

From memory: The block is unchanged from 79 through 97/98. That's just the bare block though. The pistons changed for EFI. Thus, you could rebuild an older block to match the later heads, but you couldn't just bolt in a used older short block without a rebuild.

Hope this answers your question. Ask again if it didn't.

Thanks Ludis,
I'm more interested in what changes were made in 1985 to cause felpro to have a different part number for their head gaskets. Were some emission or water jacket changes made in the heads? Any thoughts appreciated.

Ford changed the cylinder heads on 4/1/85 (and again for EFI). The head gaskets changed 6/28/85. Head bolts changed 2/2/87, but the new bolts are backwards compatible.

I also looked up the block part numbers. The 6010 "block assembly" numbers changed for 88, and then quickly were updated a few more times. I think 6010 includes the machined bare block and main bearing caps. I'm quite sure the casting number stays the same from 79.
