Best starter?

Well seems like my starter died on me.
Clicking with batteries charged good headlights bright but wont turn over.

Gonna try tapping solenoid to see if it starts.

Question is if its bad whats the best starter?

Do I need whole starter or just solenoid or only solenoid not starter?
It has been turning over slow so Im figuring the starter is toast.

I'll probably go to NAPA but could go to the International dealer.

Thanks
John

I bought the most expensive one Autozone had, the new high torque one. no problems and no regrets. it solved a lot of start and idle problems also.

Many rave about DB electrical on Ebay. I have also heard that the gear reduction starter for the SD's is a great upgrade, but I don't know all the details.

With the clicking sound, it is probably your starter solenoid (right/passengers fender), either a bad solenoid or a bad connection. Check and clean all of your connections on the batteries, starter solenoid, grounds, and starter connections. Then try jumping the solenoid's terminals to bypass the solenoid (make sure it's in park/neutral before jumping). If jumping spins your starter, go get a new starter solenoid.

I have seen bad and/or corrioded connections make the starter turn over slow. If all of your connections are good, and jumping the solenoid did help, take your starter in and have it tested.

I have put on several NAPA starters on PSD's over the years and have not had any problems with them (new, not rebuilt).

Is the starter solenoid on the fenderwell in a 350 van?
Is this in addition to the solenoid on the starter itself?

Batt connections are good just did that a few months ago.

Sorry, I missed the van part, I have never worked on a van (thank goodness) but I believe (and could be wrong) that Ford used seperate starter solenoids on them also. Shoot a PM to madvan if he does not see this and post, I know that he can help with the van stuff.

Hard to tell from a search not to many vans out there. But it appears there may only be the solenoid on the starter.
I pm'd Madvan to see if he knows.

The few vans I have worked on still had two soleniods. One is one the start and the other was on the driverside near the battery area. This was on and older gasser though.

PM's sent.
The relay is in the fender in on the passenger side.
You have to remove the battery to get to it or even see it.

Thanks for the help
At least I know where it is now.
I'm gonna try tapping the starter first and see what happens since thats probably the easiest thing to do.

The guy I bought my truck from said he installed a Super Duty starter on it. I'm assuming he did, since the old starter was sitting in the back of the truck when I bought it. My truck seems to fire over pretty quickly, and certainly has a different sound than other OBS Powerstrokes when the starter is turning over.

Apparently the SD starters turn the motor over quicker for easier starts, or at least that's what he was told when he decided to upgrade it...

Well I pulled the battery and looked for the realy and there's nothing in the fender.
So Im guessing I dont have a seperate relay.

I pulled the starter and gonna get it checked.

I emailed that DB electrical guy to see if he has mine he didnt have one listed at the time.

Interested is the Superduty starter a direct fit anyone got part number?

If it is the starter you could always get it rebuilt I did and haven't had a problem with it and was way cheeper than a new one
