It's time to change out the engine, I done a bit of looking and I sure all my answers are posted here somewhere, but can't seem to find them all in one place.
So here goes, I would like to swap out my 87 460 to a fuel injected newer engine, 400 maybe even a 351m. what years would be the best to look for and can I find a new/rebuilt one with all the FI, and computer controls with wiring? I would rather not look to a wrecking yard for the engine itself. Also, do I need to swap fuel tanks to allow for in tank fuel pumps or can the stock ones accept the pump?
Stats as is now,
87, 460 carburated(TBI ?), c-6 trans, dual exhaust, cruise, Air cond. front end Hub to Hub less that 300 miles, trans-case less than 500 miles, tranny about 8K on it
The truck itself is in Excellent shape inside and out, the engine and engine controls are just really tired, would rather spend 5-6K on a swap than 20+K on a newer truck. Mechanical and fabricating abilities are no problem.
the 351m and 400 never came efi nor did they get produced into ford trucks after 85-86. best bet would be to rebuild what you have and go with efi on the truck. there are plenty of 88+ trucks with efi equipped 460's at the yards to source parts
Go to the 460 forum instead of this one, because you will find the info from all years of the 460 to answer all your questions. A newer efi 460 might be what you are looking for, but from what I am hearing, if you want a lot of performance, the carburetor 460 is better because there just aren't many parts available for efi 460's to improve them.

It wouldn't be that hard to swap in another 460, I like Ford Multi Port EFI, its far better than any carburetor could ever claim to be. I'd look for a donor truck, 89-97, and rebuild the motor out of that and keep driving yours, then you can snag all the good parts from it and still sell it in the end to make a few thousand back.
