coats 2020 tire machine

At an upcoming auction there is a Coats 2020 superstar tire machine. From the pictures it looks well used. Does anyone know if Coats tire machines are any good?

If you have the room for it, it's not a bad machine. You can get covers for the bar ends to keep from scratching aluminum rims.

They will last a long time, and are pretty handy to have. I like some aspects of the over the top mag machines, but the old style machines like that are pretty handy too. I like the ability to break both beads at the same time...

I used an old 100% manual changer for a long time. I was at the right place at the right time and got a 2020 at a super deal ......we got a new changer, haul this one off for us? Oh how I LOVE my 2020!!!!

For a business the new over the top changers are the cats a$$ but at $3-4K my backyard shop will never see one. My friends all like my 2020 too!

Basically, put the rim on the center post, spin the holding piece on, pull the bead breaker over the top, then push the pedal to break the beads, put the bead breaker aside, and then get the bar under the bead, place on the flat part of the center post, push the pedal again to peel the tire off the rim, repeat, tire is off. To put the tire on, you place the bar on the rim and center post, put the tire on to peel on, and press the pedal. Not too bad.

I have many, many hours on these machines. Their only limitation, for me anyways, is the overall tire size. They can only fit about a 36" tire, but that isn't a big deal in most shops. I deal mostly with 36-42" tires, with the exception of he occasional car tire just for personal stuff. For the time being, I do it all by hand.

They don't do well with exceptionally wide tires either. I have an older one that we use for our race car tires. It could probably stand to be overhauled, as it's a little underpowered for my taste, but like I said that's probably because it needs to be cleaned and overhauled. I have problems breaking beads on the 12" slicks and sometimes it's hard to get it to peel the bead over the wheel rim. I've often gotten the bar stuck between the bead and the wheel and it doesn't have enough power to go forward or back. I have to smack the bar up off the center post with a big hammer to get it free, and then start over. I think this is just a problem with the slicks because they have such a stiff bead, I only had this problem with a few bigger truck tires, but for most passenger tires it's been fine.

You can get that with the overhead machines too. Line pressure also will be a factor there as well.

Unless it's an electrically powered machine.....
For the air ones, you can install a larger air cylinder, change the pivot point of the cylinder, or increase the line pressure. Make sure to lube everything well, since it's probably never been done since it was new.

ANY powered tire changer is easier to use than an old manual style or the old hammer and tire spoon method ! ! !

Did you get the Coats??? I have a parts manual for it if you need it.

Looking for Coats 2020 manual

Hi,

My father in law just gave me his coats 2020 tire machine and I'm looking for a manual for it. I found a parts list so far but would like to find a PDF of the actual manual.

Also, where would I get those covers to protect alloy rims?

Thanks in advance,

Karl

Welcome to FTE-
Here's a parts breakdown and general maintenance manual:
http://www.aescosc.com/pdfs/2020%20TIRE%20CHANGER.pdf
You should be able to get the protectors from that same company or from Discount Tire/America's Tire, or Big O Tires.

I went to the auction today. The Coats Machine went for $425.00. I thought it went high for the condition it was in.
