460 valve adjustment

AFAIK,
Hydralic valve settings with a NON-Positve stop are
adjusted by turning the nut down 1-1 1/2 turns after
clacking quits.

460 valve adjustment

It won't have adjustable valves unless someone changed them to adjustable. They should torque to 22lbs.

460 valve adjustment

If they're '68-71 heads, the best thing you can do is install a set of Crane Kool Nuts. They have an Allen set screw that'll allow you to adjust your hydraulic lifter preload. This is especially important if you're running an aftermarket cam. If you've been just tightning them down to 22lbs and then go to the Kool nuts with a lifter preload of 1/4-1/2 turn, you'll notice a big difference in idle and performance.

460 valve adjustment

I was on Cranes websight awhile back and saw that putting those on made the valves adjustable, then couldn't believe how cheap they were. They were less than $30.I just rebuilt my 429 with 72 heads and had to use the shims to adjust pre load it was a PITA.

it depends on what heads you have as to how easy it is to convert to adjustable rockers.

the early heads (C8, C9 and DOVE) heads all used screw in rocker studs, so you can either change these out to aftermarket studs, guide plates and the cool nuts to have adjustable rocker arms (or you could just use the cool nuts as long as you don't need to adjust past the neck on the studs)

on the later heads (D3VE) they used a bolt down style rocker arm with a milled pedastle and bolt that are non-adjustable. you either have to shim or get different lenght pushrods to adjust.

I think either Crane or Comp cams makes a kit to convert these to adjustable rocker arms. not sure what is all involved or needed to do this conversion. or you could go the machining route and mill off the slot and redrill and tap to accept rocker studs.

Hello, new member here, first reply.

I'm seeing that Crane offers a pushrod guide set for the 460 heads that use the lock down fulcrum rockers. The guide is made to fit right into the slot where the squaire fulcrum suppose to sit & has 5/16" flanged screw in stud holding the guide in place. Has a peice the slips into the end of the guide that the pushrod goes through I guess for reducing wear.

Crane also has adjustable pushrods for the B/B, pushrods you can run, with oil passage, not just the checking adjuster type, but be ready to spend around 250.00 or more.

This replys NOT intended to be an addvertisment for Crane, just what I have learned in the almost 2 years dealing with the 460 I am trying to keep running.
