How small is your town

Mr. Fixit, 90% of the problem here in the LML, is that the "city mayors" are more concerned with making money, than fix the problems. Twinning the PM isn't going to solve SFA, unless Highway 1 is widened as well, it should be 4 lanes each way from Surrey to Chilliwack, with an HOV lane in the middle, and a truck only lane at the curb. DO NOT allow the trucks out of that lane during the day, without laying VERY heavy fines on them. 2 lanes for the commuters would be plenty. Get rid of the 152/108 on-ramp at the bridge, make people use the 104 instead, with a merge lane that stretches from 104 to 108..
But city Planners were told this in the 50's when they first made the Highway 1, they laughed that Vancouver wouldnt ever need 4 lanes going into the city...
Now it is estimated at 10 billion to take on that project, and being that it took them almost 10 years to finish widening Watcom road. estimated 50 years for Highway 1....
My last b!tch is, Transit, why do we have the smallest population, but the highest transit costs in North America... 5 bucks for a 1 way trip from North Van to Surrey....

How many pubs? When I lived there in 2006 they did a study and there were 26 drinking establishments. They included all pubs, lounges, etc......
You don't get out much do you?

1. Stokers
2. Speeders
3. Regent
4. Big Eddy Pub (where I cooked for a couple of years)
5. Rock Pit (Which I am barred for life for hitting some ******* over the head with a pool cue)
6. The sports bar whose name has suddenly escaped me.
I think that is all the bars, lounges would take me awhile to name....

For some unknown reason, Google doesn't want to work properly....

Thanks Warriormama for getting this thead back on track!
Secret Agent 69: There are many reasons everything is so slow here and so costly. Here are a few:
• we are Canadians, so we tend not to care about anything but beer and hockey. Under that attitude is the 'pioneer spirit' (which has evolved into "leave me alone")
• we are a big city now but people haven't realized it. We still think small. Once ridership on rapid transit increases, fares will become a better deal.
• almost all our politicians have no opinions or ideas of their own. The ones that have ideas tend to be buried in red tape. Mega construction is the only winner usually - the only way to get money out of Ottawa/Victoria.
• simple obvious improvements almost never get into use: for example 'Interurban trains'; more 'sea buses'; electric trams along Arbutus Street (from Steveston to Stanley Park as used to run up to 1956); tolls on Lion's Gate/Deas tunnel (like we had up to the 1960s)
• enlightened drug programs; improved recycling programs etc etc.
Sorry, I'm sounding like a broken record and it's time for lunch! Cheers!

Mr. Fixit,
With the increase in Transit, the only thing it has done is raise the number of vehicles on the road. Transit in Vancouver is not subsidized by the government. When it stopped being BC TRANSIT and started being Coast Mountain Bus Company. Coast Mountain is a privately owned Company, there is not way in hell they'll ever drop the fare price.
I miss the small towns sometimes...

Don't be so sure about fare 'adjustments' Secret Agent 069 - my two kids attended UBC (one is still there) and a student pass ( called UPass) was negotiated so that for a flat rate of $20/month, UBC students could use the bus/skytrain anytime anywhere. The effect was dramatic and it made a huge difference in ridership (Also it now costs $600 per term to park at UBC!) Because of the UPass, hundreds, if not thousands of students left their cars at home, or didn't buy a car - as in the case of my kids.
IMO $5 to take transit from N. Van to Surrey is high but so is driving. If you calculate out the cost of driving anywhere each day, it is very expensive. Perhaps $5 is not excessive? I take the bus from the Marpole area of Vancouver to Horseshoe Bay for a 2 zone ticket costing $3.25. That seems like a deal to me. I can load my bicycle easier than on a car and I always carry a big pack and usually a small handcart - no extra charge.
The lower mainland has merged into a sprawling mess - but few people are willing to change anything about their daily lives yet. With such cheap oil, no tolls, meak politicians and sleepy-I'm-alright-Jack citizens, the automobile will remain King
How small is your town? Here in Vancouver, not small enough.
