I know many guys that have taken clients out to dinner or on trips in an XLT. This is in the world of engineering though. So I'm not sure that status symbol vehicles are all that important. It may be different in banking or other things...
Now that I think of it, I've taken clients out in my XL.
what are you saying FX4 is the offroad edition trucks are meant for going
muddin
Fx4 has different shocks and rims, the rest of the stuff is available on other models, my xlt will do just as well off road as your Fx4. I am payin several thousand for somethin i can put on for a few hundred.
My truck is just over a year old so I'll probably be waiting out this revision and getting one in 2014. Either that or will be getting a 2013 model. its usually best to buy late in the lifecycle of a redesign. That way you let other people sort out the bugs

You get more than just shocks and rims:
1. Body color bumpers
2. Steel interior accents.
3. Better gauges.
4. Nicer chrome ringed air vents.
5. Skit plates are included, not optional with 4x4.
6. Different grill.
7. 5.4L is included, not optional.
8. Aluminum alloy wheels.
9. Keyless entry keypad.
10. Leather wrapped steering wheels.
11. Black rubber off-road floor matchs.
12. Fog lights
13. Tow hooks
14. 3.73 axle
15. 4x4
and more. Sure, you can add many of these things to an XLT, but it ends up being more expensive than the FX4 package price. You can't get all that for several hundred in an XLT. The 5.4 upgrade and the 4x4 alone will cost thousands.

Look, I'm gonna have to ask you to go ahead, just come back another time. I got a meeting with the Bob's in a couple minutes.

most of what you listed has no practical purpose, just little things to give the truck a slightly different apearance from the other models, with little to no additional cost to ford. tow hooks and fog lights come with the 4x4 option on xlt. And I personlally dont want a pained bumper to get sctatched up by brush.
Power windows have no practical purpose. Neither does clear coat. Or nice looking wheels. Or AC (windows work just fine). Or power windows. Or power mirrors. Or anything other than vinyl bench seats and a rubber floor. Or power seats. Or a power rear window. Or a radio. Or CD player. Or overhead console. People buy the impractical things and luxuries in their life they feel comfortable spending the money on. For some that's a $500 POS clunker with constant problems... for others that's Platinum edition. Its all relative to income, perception, budget, debt load, etc. If you made half of what you do now I guarantee you that your idea of "practical" would be different, and it would also be different if you made twice as much as you do now.
Amazing how some people knock down what they don't have. My brother owns a 400K home. I don't have anything close to that and cannot afford it. I could knock him for how impractical it is but instead I congratulate him on his success. If your neighbor buys a fancy truck... be happy for him instead of cutting him for it. I'd love to buy a 2007-2008 Powerstroke right now... but its way out of my budget. Doesn't mean I knock down the choice to buy one.
Its all relative. If money were not an issue in a buying decision, what would you buy? The fact that money is an issue for me, and most people on this planet, limits our choices.

I like the 08 FX2 package. Wonder if it will be available in 09?
I do too, but when I went to "build" one it turned out to be as expensive as a Lariat and many of the convenience options that I would like are not curently available on the FX-2...like heated seats, power-fold mirrors, power-slide rear window. I will wait and see what the eco-force V-6 offers in terms of horsepower, mileage, and most importantly whether it will run on 87 octane. Hopefully, there will also be smaller versions of the Boss introduced in 5.8L and/or 5.0L displacements. Even though the power is OK for my needs, I definitely want better mileage than the 5.4 currently achieves.
I voted for XLT as that is all I would need. I will be getting either a late 08 or early 09 as our company Case IH has switched from Ford Escapes to F-150 4 door short beds as our company rides. My Escape lease runs out in mid July so I will be on the bubble as to which year I get.
They will be XLT's upgraded with the bucket seats and consul up front, E85 engines and aluminum wheels. Other wise they are just XLT's.

Just XLT's aren't bad if some else is providing the ride....THEY ARE GREAT!
