ESCAPE Vacuum problem - DPFE?

2001 Escape V6. I am troubleshooting this for my girlfriends nephew's ride. So my observations are limited. However it has the stumbling idle when cold will sometimes stall when cold. After the vehicle warms up it runs fine.

I have done numerous searches on this site on this topic and it seems a variety of problems exist with IAC valve (already replaced) DPFE sensor, MAF sensor (cleaned, not replaced) upper intake gaskets leaking etc.... We had the lean bank 1 and 2 codes P0171 and P0174.

Here's something different I noticed with this problem I hadn't heard described here. An L-shaped hose going into the upper intake body that was collapsing. I took it off and it appeared clogged and the sides of the tube was clearly weakened from collapsing for so long. I replaced the hose with something similar from Autozone, only $6. I was going to start with the DPFE sensor and then the MAF, but since I'm trying to do the boy a favor I don't want to start just swapping out parts guessing.

So.. my question is...

Does that behavior, collapsing hose point to one over the other? Removing the line from the DPFE to the EGR does nothing to affect the stumbling idling. The vehicle does seem to run some better, but still appears to be laboring a little on idle when cold.

Also fuel filter was replaced, outside of the fuel filter looked bad, dented and rusted, but fuel appeared to be clean coming out of it. ??

Any ideas appreciated.
Thanks!

Replace the lower intake gaskets, the pcvtube (if collapsed) and pcv valve to fix the 171,174 codes. If you dont have any egr codes dont replace the DPFE.

Antony, thanks for the reply. I will get the gaskets and PCV and make that the next repair. Any "special" tools needed for the job. Doesn't look like it, but my service manual for the vehicle hasn't arrived yet.

Cold weather = running bad.

Minus 3 this morning in southcentral Ohio, I guess the Escape ran REALLY bad this morning. Consistent with the leaky intake seals and PCV issues.

We'll see if it resolves the issue.

Yup, changed my plugs today and upper gaskets, dpfe and it still misses on acceleration. I am going to do the fuel filter now and see what happens.

Fuel Filter is a no go. Same problem, but it needed a new filter anyways. I did take off my IAC and cleaned it a little bit and that is my problem. It just idles weird now, but it no longer misses upon acceleration, but idles high and you can feel it. I'm going to my Autozone now and pick one up for $83 bucks. Sheesh, all day playing with this issue. what a waste of a perfectly good Southern California Saturday.
