Wink First Tow

Ok,

I was watching this site regularly before I decided to buy my new 2008 FX4 F-350 CC, SB w/ 6.4 L diesel. I received my new truck December 12 and traded in my 2003 F-350 CC LB V-10. I tow a Weekend Warrior LE3105 and when fully loaded is around 15,000 lbs.

I now have 1300 miles on my new truck and took my 5th wheel out camping for the first time. Here are my first impressions vs. V-10 gas motor:
  1. Power. I can tell you I hit a few grades that required my V-10 to be full throttle (5,000 RPM) that my diesel just cruised up the grade at 2,500 RPM. The power with the diesel makes life so easy while pulling. I never once felt as if I was pushing the engine near it's limits.
  2. Braking. OMG I had the Prodigy brake controller on my old truck and it never felt as natural as the new ford controller. Overall braking was improved significantly over my 2003 truck.
  3. Comfort. Yes this truck has power and stopping ability. But man this things drives like a Cadillac. I barely knew the trailer was behhind me.
  4. My 2008 truck is twice the truck of my 2003.
  5. Worth every penny I paid !
  6. As far as fuel mileage, I am getting 13 MPG without towing and 12 while towing thus far. However, I didn't tow very far to go camping.
  7. To combat the fuel mileage I installed a 50 gal Transferflow tank.
This truck rocks!

Folks really don't know how good these trucks are until they tow with them. The things just like to run.

Roadwarrioz,
Good to hear about your towing trip. I just bought a 2008 F350 DRW and am getting ready to pull my SLC 3705 WW to Glamis next week. 1200 mile round trip. I look forward to the drive. I was pulling with a 2004 short bed and I am sure the ride will be less "White Knuckled."

I will be honest with you, it was such a big difference towing with the diesel it made me laugh because it was so easy. It was like cruising around in a caddy.

Great turning radius, great stopping, great power and a very smooth ride. I am not even using air bags on this truck.

Your killing me I can't wait to tow with mine. I bought my F-350 in nov.of 07 ,FX4 CC, LB, 4x4 W/4.10's . I will be towing my 5th wheel down to florida in march. Glad to here you are happy with the truck, I sure love mine. I moved up from a 99 F-250 w/5.4, so I'm looking for better towing thru the mtns.

08 F250 SC SB 4x2 with 6.4. I love this truck so far. I have owned chevy and ford diesels. I use it as a daily driver/ work truck. I love pulling with this truck. I have had the bed loaded, plus a 20' trailer with about 5-6K on it, and it pulled great. Fuel milege is so-so. But you usually have to trade some milege for more power. Only my opinon.

I LOVE my truck! I agree with you, this is the best truck I have owned. This is what I tow with mine. 2009 Weekend Warrior CR3905 LOADED! With the extra Tall Wide Slide Out. The truck pulls so good, I forget it is back there!

That is a beautiful combination right there. Truck and trailer both look amazing... I'm so jealous.

Hummm. We did condider the extra fuerl tank then realized we stop every 2 or 3 hours anyhow and ULSD is everywhere.

With 6K miles on the truck we never got that kind of MPG towing (13K + 5th wheel) 1MPG difference between towing and not towing is amazing.

We pulled the same camper 3 years with the same truck but a 05 V-10. Never pulled a grade that required full throttle on the V-10 and we pulled some good ones. The 6.4L pulls the same grades better than the V-10 for sure and at a lower RPm as that is what diesel are designed to do. but not all that much better. Unless there is no concern about Boost and EGT temps.

I am getting about 12 MPG and only getting 6 MPG Pullling this monster.

I also installed a 50 gal Transferflow Auxillary tank in the bed so I don't have to stop often for fuel.

With the size of this trailer 39' I have to look for truck stops or big fuel stations that I can fit in when I am hooked up. It makes it alot easier when I need to fuel up when I am not hooked up and I can shop for the best price and load up when the price is good.

I have the same truck with a 2005 35' Montana 5th Wheel weighing around 15,000 lbs. I have 2700 miles on my truck and am getting about 11 mpg empty. When I pulled my trailor to Devils Den a couple of weeks ago I got about 7.2 mpg. The pull is about 75 miles from my house and about 1/2 of that was some very steep hills through the mountain. Pulled excellent and the trans brake works very well.
