Want to remove smog equip. 460

Hey. I did a search and came up empty, so I gotta post.

I have a '73 F250 Camper Special. The engine is a 460 and is a replacement. I think it is bone stock.

I have read removing the smog equipment (EGR?) is not a bad idea.

Anybody have a step-by step guide to this procedure? Links, etc.

Sopmebody help me out here, please? Maybe I worded it wrong???

I've heard alot of folks take out the EGR stuff. Is that the hoses that come out of the valve covers and go into the air cleaner? Do you just plug the holes in the valve cover?

On the left side of the engine (facing the front of the truck) the hose looks like it goes from the valve cover to the carb. Do you have to do something special with that?

I'm gonna have some cash to spend soon and I was thinking about a new carb and maybe I could get some valve covers as well. Would that just eliminate the whole deal?

I appreciate any insight.

Ugly F250, I am not real sure if your 73 has an EGR valve, but if it does it will be mounted on the rear of a plate that lies sandwiched between the carburetor and intake manifold. As for removing it, thats your call. Some people say there is not much difference in performance, or none at all with it unhooked. I leave mine hooked up. Its seems to help keep the motor from spark knocking. The hoses you are talking about are for your PCV sytem, leave them hooked up as it draws your crankcase gases back into the motor and mixes with your fuel charge in the intake manifold, and then on to be burned up in the combustion chamber.

Thanks SD!

What about if you buy new valve covers and a new air cleaner cover that is not equipped for that? Do you need to create another PCV system?

Right bank valve cover has the PCV valve in it that goes to the back of the carb spacer plate.
The left bank valve cover at the front gets a vented oil cap.

The EGR & Carb spacer plate are removed and replcaed with a spacer plate of your choice, the options are:

1)A plain 3/4"-1" spacer.

2)3/4" - 1" spacer with hot water through tube for faster warm-ups(not neccessary in Hot climates)

3)Spacer plate with PCV hose attachment.
(this is the one that I chose)

uglyF250, Yes you can replace your valve covers with aftermarket ones. You can use breather caps on the valve covers which would just let the crakcase gases vent out of them, which hurts nothing. Or your new covers may have the proper gromets to allow you to re-use your original PCV equipment. The main idea is to be able to allow the crancase gases to escape an not build pressure in the crankcase, which could cause oil to slobber into your air breather, out a dipstick tube, and if these items are sealed good enough it can blow oil seals out. The idea of the PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) system was to capture these gases and route them into the combustion chamber to be burnt rather than allow them to escape into the air and cause pollution. Old old vhicles used to just have a vent pipe that ran down the side of the motor that allowed this pressure to escape into the atmosphere. Its just all about ventilation, thats what I meant about not plugging off your PCV hoses.
