On the rental issue, you also have to think what type of person would rent an excursion from a rental company. Then you have to ask if that demographic is the type to trash a vehicle.
Thanks, Bryan
It was with the premise that I purchased a BMW from the Dealership that used it as a service loaner for 11k miles. You had to bring in a BMW for service and this was what they gave you. It was new never titled, but driven by many. It served me very well for almost 40k miles. It was not the type of car you keep indefinitely. Only issue was an annual O2 sensor. First one on the way home when I was seeing what she'd do. CEL at 115mph. Mechanic said it was just coincidence.
I do not think an excursion is that vehicle you rent to beat on. You can't rip it around corners with the ebrake, cant go 100, and the motor can take the beatings; its the rest that gets torn up. My buddy had a neon as a loaner for 5 weeks as his car was being fixed. We took turns beating on it. When he returned it, ebrake would not engage, engine had an upper rpm issue, front air dam gone, couple other things to go with the 3k miles we put on. I bet it is still fine after brake service....maybe

maybe it's just me... but i wouldn't treat a rental or loaner any different, than i would my own... actually i would be embarrastd to say so if i did, and surely wouldn't brag about it...
i have never understood how damaging property, any property, is fun...
i would think and hope those that would are in the minority...
i raced motorcycles (enduro's) for years and always thought completing a race with no damage was good... and the best way to do well...
maybe i had to work to hard to get what i have to think outherwise...
i guess i shouldn't even post about this, but i have never been one to not say what i think... even if it gets me into trouble... so if i offend someone, i am sorry because that is not my intent...
So I saw the sales manger today and to my surprise, he was very helpful and accomodating. He said that they would take care of the door issue and that he also would find out about the paint. We'll see. I will keep you posted.

I certainly agree. Even when I was a kid, I hated demolition derbies. Yeah, the old cars were on their way to the junk yard, but I'd think about when they were brand new and the first proud owners of them and all the stories that they could probably tell. We happened to be at a fair in the 1980's that had a demolition derby where some idiot took a really nice 1959 Ford and entered it. This was when a lot of them were using the early to mid 1970's GM wagons with the clamshell rear doors and those beasts made short work of the poor little Ford.
I also don't enjoy the burnout videos. I guess it's different strokes for different folks, but I certainly wouldn't subject my vehicle to unnecesary abuse. And then there's those silly chain them together and pull the guts out of them videos that don't prove anything but who has the best traction.
I also treat rental vehicles like my own and take care of them while they're in my care. In the mid - 1990's my mother bought a 1993 Pontiac Sunbird program car that had been an Avis rental car. It was in great condition and was an excellent automobile the whole time she owned it. Other than normal servicing, the only repair that it ever required was a minor recall. She gave up driving about 4 years ago and sold it to a friend who is still driving it.
I agree. There is no law that says you HAVE to abuse a motor vehicle. My own Excursion came out of a Hertz rental at 14,000 mi. There is not so much as a scratch. Not anywhere. Not even the under-carriage. Engine oil was clean. Transmission oil was not discolored.
Before I bought this one, I looked at a number of Excursions. As noted in another "thread", my prejudices about Ford products notwithstanding, I was AMAZED to see that most of them had VERY high mileage - meaning, they apparently give good service. I did not want to take chances, so I paid extra for a "Certified" one off a Ford dealer's lot. late 2005 production - Limited with "all the trimmins". MINT MINT MINT. Nov. 06 paid $27,500. Did see one at a NON Ford dealer for about five thousand less, with approx. the same mileage. Torn upholstery, dirty rugs, banged up undercarriage. Over-spray on rubber seals on one door. Paint pitted on front end.
Don't forget about your braking issue. Most Excursions need new ball joints and suspension bushings starting around 50K +/- 25K miles. The lurch, jump, clunk you hear is probably the front suspension. The other items guaranteed to need replacing are all four calipers as the slide seals suck. Without a doubt, one is going to hang and warp your rotor . Been there done all of that.

I have an appointment with the service dept. on Monday morning to have them re-align the door. I will also have them check a few other things such as, sloppy steering, the brakes and the right locker. The right locker is much harder to engage than the driver side. My brother in-law also bought an 05 X xlt a couple of days after me and i checked out his truck and steering, braking and lockers all seem to be fine. Go figure, I went with him and helped him choose his.
How much are new calipers? And what could cause the steering to be a little sloppy (meaning there is some play when driving, I am constantly adjusting the steering wheel when traveling down the freeway.)
So here is an update after I went to bring the truck in for service. They were supposed to re-align the door, which they said they did, but doesn't look like they did anything. In any case, there were other problems I had them look at and sure enough, they found some issues:
Problem #1: Slight surge right before coming to a complete halt.
Finding: Couldn't reproduce problem
Problem #2: Passenger rear door out of alignment (see pictures in previous post).
Finding: We did the best we could to re-align it. (After inspecting it, it looks like they didn't do anything to it at all.)
Problem #3: Steering sloppy, constantly adjusting while trying to go straight.
Finding: Replace tie rods
Problem #4: Passenger side locker is hard to engage.
Finding: Replace the locker on that side
I spent over 3 hours with my 3 kids this morning at the stealership for them to find out about these problems. Now the assistant service manager is telling me that before they can actually start working on replacing the parts, they would have to talk to the used-car sales manager and wait for a call back from them tomorrow.
In your opinion, shouldn't they have found out about these problems (tie-rod and locker) before they put it on the lot for sale? Are these issues they should have found when they do their 100+ point inspections?
Is this something I'm supposed to pay for or should the dealership pay for it? Am I being too unreasonable? I just bought the car last week.
Our Excursion has just hit 50K. Its a 2005, purchased in Sept of 06, Limited V10 Fully loaded, former Hertz Car, purchased in San Francisco when gas was through the roof for 24K. I did a carfax at home, and the dealer also supplied one. Looked the car over at the dealership, they added the 100K ford warranty and it is a certified preowned car. Brakes were done at 25K and Blitzens Shocks at 35K. The wife and I are very happy with outs.
You are buying a vehicle, and you have every right to be happy, or satisfied with it. I hope it works out for you as these are great family vehicles.
You don't get a new truck when you buy a used one . You expect it to have some problems . No one fixes up a vehicle prior to selling it . If your unable to fix it up your self , buy new .
The problems your finding are imho are consistant with a vehicle of that age & mileage .

Are you serious? I am talking about a dealership here not Joe Schmoe from around the corner. You are telling me that the dealer doesn't fix used cars before they put on the lot? You are basically saying it's ok for a dealer to put a "certified" vehicle on the lot that might have safety issues.
And your statement about buying new if you can't fix it is a little ignorant imho. As far as I know, 2005 was the last year Ford made Excursions. Oh well....

I'm sure everything will work out for the best too. We love the truck. The dealer just needs to correct the few items and we're good to go.
Certified is right up there with " we backup every car we sell " . You want an X OF COURSE YOU MUST BUY "USED ". And with the "used "comes use & normal wear . The cosmetic appearance is basically what's 'Certified '. It's advertiseing , selling the sizzle of a steak .
No , I'm not saying it's right , but the used car market is Buyer Beware . I'm sure you have a good vehicle . We all wait for the other shoe to hit the floor when we buy used . I know I'm that way with my 01 X. I have to relax & enjoy it for today & not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow never comes .
