oil filter location on a factory 83-up 460 4x4
This is question for you guys out there with the factory 460's in your 83 and up F-250 4x4's with the TTB front axle. How is your oil filter located on the block? Do you have an off set adapter that aims the filter toward the front of the motor for easy access? Or do they have the filter going straight up against the block like a regular Ford engine. I will be installing a 460 in my 82 F-250 4x4 soon and got the factory parts for an 83 4x4 so everything will set just like its an 83 F-250 4x4. Any way my donor motor was a 79 460 from an E-250 Econoline, so I have the off set oil filter adapter that the van used. And I bought a factory Ford oil filter adapter that screws straight in the block like a regular Ford engine. And being that I have no pattern F-250, 460 4x4 truck to look at, I'm asking here.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 26-Feb-02 AT 01:50 AM (EST)]Thanks Law, It sounds like you have the set up that came on the vans engine. I still have it setting on my garge floor cover up with a rag. It aimed the filter out toward the front of the motor somewhat under the fuel pump. Is this how your's is?

FWIW, I think it's the same on both the 4x4 and 4x2 models.
On my '96 F-250 460 it sticks out at an angle from the front of the engine like the other guys said. Real easy to get to, a bit sloppy when you take it off.
BUT-- Not half as bad as the 5.4 L engine in my 2000 F-150.
That one mounts horizontally, right above the left front axle. Dumps the entire contents out when you loosen it and a beach to reach up and grab. No fun doing an oil change on the new Ferd.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 04-Mar-02 AT 02:38 AM (EST)]Thanks for the responses. It sounds like I will re-use my off-set oil filter adapter that was used on the motor when it was in the van. The engine is still on the stand right now. Work on it as time will allow. But all I have left is the rockers and pushrods then set the intake and we are in business. . Then it will be time to rip the 400 out and go from there.
Thanks again,
Thanks again,

The front frame crossmember is different on factory installed 460 trucks. It is angeled down in front to allow for oil filter adapter. In 82 they did not offer a 460! You can open up the original frame opening with a hotwrench and use a fram PH8A or a shorter PH43 filter. Or you can install a remote filter on the frame near the brake pressure differential valve! Either way you will have to change the filter screw in adapter in the block to the 70's style with the external threads to screw the filter or remote adapter on. Good Luck!
