Post worn distributor gear!

Anybody have problems wearing out dist gears on a 429/460
I have a comp extreme 4x4 cam, MSD dist. I tried a stock
dist with the same result, moved the gear up and down on the shaft which didn't seem to help. The oil pump seems to turn easily (no binding). Any ideas?

Just my thoughts on the problem...leave one of the worn gears on there for awhile and see if it continues to get worse. You would think that once it wears itself in, it would be fine.

worn distributor gear!

I hope you caught this before it destroyed the cam on a fresh motor! I didn't. After tear down, bearing and cam replacement, sending distributor to MSD for gear hardness testing, and talking to every manufacturer I still had the problem of distributor gear wear after 30 minutes cam break in and tuning. (this is a comp cams 280/ msd pro billet combo) I have another 460 with comp cams 270/ mallory unilite/ jacobs computer ignition combo with approx. 50,000 miles on it. Removing the distributor I found no visible wear! I ordered a Mallory gear #29420 from summit/ installed it on the msd dist. No problem ever since Good luck!

I was just doing some searching the web on for info on roller cams for the 460. The one website (crane I think) mentioned haveing to use a brass gear and a heavy duty washer in there somewhere for a certain cam. They offer both. It's something that the people at Crane might be able to help you with also and it might be worth giving them a call.
