53 Truck Build drive shaft help!!

I am building a 53 and am using a 302 motor with the original 3 speed manual trans. I put in a 1997 explorer rear and would like to use the original drive shaft. The length is good but the universal joint will not work. The joint on the drive shaft is 3 1/4 cap to cap and 3 5/8 on the rear end yoke. Does anyone make a universal this size or do a have to change the drive shaft or rear yoke. Thanks

go to the local parts house and find someone with knowledge of the books , not the 'putor . they should have one with universals in it with the dimensions etc. and i'll bet theres one right for you . last one like that i did i went to fueher bros , a now defunct operation here in town { had a scrapyard out back you'd kill to walk in but wear a bib if you were fortunate enuff !!!!} and told one of 'em what i was doing , and gave him the dimensions and 10 minutes later i was out the door . why aint there places like that anymore sheeeesh ............

A shop that specializes in building driveshafts can take care of your problem. In our area the best one is Inland Driveshaft. I think they have locations in multiple states. Look in your yellow pages or google for your area.

65fstbk, Fiind a local company/supplier/ parts -house /machine shop/axle supplier near you, make some phone calls ,tell them what you"ve got..what you need, then ask them what "they" need(where to measure to and from)and go for it..most experienced shops will know exactly what you both need..Good Luck!!

I usually have the best luck with u-joint searches at an industrial bearing and transmission parts supply house because they have all this type of info available to them.

Talking U Joints

If you have a NAPA close by and can get somebody to use the catalog, there is a section in the back with combination u joints if you don't find one let me know the width and the cap diameters and i'll look it up for you.
