460 running problems ?????
I have a 88 F-350 w/460. back in jan 1/15/02 the timeing cover gasket was leaking anti-freeze so i pulled it all apart and noticed that the timeing chain have over 2inches of play on one side (truck ran great up untill now) so i changed the chain and gears ok. when the motor is cold it starts fine and runs fine, when the motor is at operateing temp it runs fine no misses at all (timeing is perfect). BUT NOW HERES THE PROBLEM when i turn it off and goto restart it turn over slowly. Its like the battery is bad or starter is bad it turns over real slowly and. I have put all new alternater, battery, starter solenoid, and cables. again on 3/23/02 i replaced alt,starter/starter solenoid, cables and timeing chain and gears, plugs, wire, cap and rotor and have tired numerous plugs and Still having same problem. I have it grounded well 1 from the frame to battery, 1 from the block to the battery, and from the battery to the body. and the bell housing is clean of crud for the starter. Now i have talked to my moms friend and he said that my valve guides/seats are going bad. he said now that i put new chain and gears that i have put valve train out of sinc, but when engine runs i goes back in sinc? Does or can anyone help with this problem I mean this motor runs very stong and great. you know i'm beating chevy's off the line with my tire smoke she runs strong and only have 139,000 on truck. please help if you have run or know some one who has run into this problem.
Thanx Craig

460 running problems ?????
What happens if the engine has a chance to cool off ,then you try and start it ?
New Batteries are known to go bad quickly
Starters are known to be Bad from out of the box.
Perhaps your problem is a Starter getting EXTRA hot and then failing.

460 running problems ?????
If you replaced the chain and gears, and didn't check the ignition timing, you may have it mis-timed because of the slack in the chain that is no longer there... Previously, someone may have reset the timing to make up for the slack allowing the timing to retard a little, and then you replaced the gearset, putting the distributor into an advanced state. This would be aggravated by the engine sealing a little better when warmed up, thus producing a little more compression, and when it fires up, it is just to advanced for the starter to overcome easily...

460 running problems ?????
the fuel lines, high pressure pump, fuel pump, both sending units and strainers. the lines are no wear near any heat source as far as the timing goes. I can turn dist. any direction while cranking does not really speed up when advanced or slow down when retarted. I have also tried moving dist 1 and 2 teeth forward and backward. when i did this it ran really crappie. ran real rough like it had a huge cam and black smoke out the duals.

460 running problems ?????
I have a 1988 F350 with the 460 in it. My 460 had 78k when I bought it, now it has 105k. I had the same exact problem. I put a lower temp thermostat in it and it fixed the problem. Mine was over heating, even though the gage put it in the normal region, actually exactly half way. If I am idling in heavy traffic, or towing around the farm, and the truck's temp rises, the problem returns. I am not exactly sure what is happening, whether the engine is getting too hot causing more friction, or that the engine is getting hot, causing the battery to get hot, and therefore provide less current. Not sure but mine is fixed.

460 running problems ?????
If it ran fine before you started messing with the timing gears and chain, and now doesn't...
I'd say it's highly unlikely to be anything other than something to do with the timing gears and chain. The symptom you describe sounds like a timing issue as well.
First, I'd verify that you do in fact have the correct timing set. Then, I'd check to be sure that the marks/dots line up between the cam and crank gear. (Facing each other with the cam notch at 6 o clock and the crank gear at twelve o clock).
I almost forgot to do this when I replaced my stock set with a New Ford Performance set.
