2004 Expedition Door Latch and keypad issue

Good Day

Sorry for asking this question without searching the forums first, but I have been unable to find out how to search this forum.

I have 2 issues

1. The right hand front passenger door no longer latches. i.e. I open the door from the inside and when I close the door it will not latch. I have to swing the door open and lock and unlock the door using the inside door lock controls. You can hear it unstick the latch. It will then close and latch the door. Unfortunately we have been caught driving more then once without the door latched (always at slow speeds so far, but still very scary). I quess I am asking if this is something I can fix or do I have to take it to the dealer?

2. The drivers side door keypad is not functioning correctly anymore. You can type in the key sequence over and over again. It works 2 out of 10 times and only if you press very hard. I am guessing this is a worn out keypad and I would like to know how much I should expect to pay to get this fixed at the dealer.

Try spraying some WD-40 in your door latch, as far as your key pad, I'd say you need a new one

Looks like a new keypad is about $50 at the following forum sponsors web site.

Thank you for your replies.

I have sprayed WD-40 in the latch area.

Here is the strange part, nothing that is visible moves when I do the lock unlock. It is something inside of the latch that I cannot see that changes position and then everything works.

Thank you for the reply on the keypad. Is there a link somewhere that talks about the difficulty in changing that out?

There's no post I'm aware of for changing these. I've however seen where people have pulled the keypad and cleaned the contacts and have got them working again.

By the sounds of things as far as your door not staying latched I'd say it's your latch mechanism that appears to be bad.
As far as pulling either of them I couldn't tell you for sure how to pull the door panel in a 04, mine is a 99 and I know it real well but I imagine there's differences. I can tell you that pulling the keypad and door mechanism is kind of a pain.

I'd recommend you purchase a repair manual as these topics are usually covered in them, and for the money they can save you they more than pay for themselves. Another option is the following site that I've heard of others using you can subscribe to for repair information. I haven't used them myself but maybe theres others out here that can tell you more about them.

I have subcribed to the Helm on line repair when working on cars for other people and it worked well. I think it was about $10 for 72 hours and you can even print out what you want.
