Synthetic Oil?

What are you useing now???
I have a 97' 5.4 and since the first oil change from factory I've used castrol 10w-30
and I have no leaks, my oppinion is stick with what your using. And i've heard that starting the use of synthetics on a higher mileage vehicle will just start to cause leaks
as gaskets have gotten older and prittle, can't confirm though. My wifes Escape we
started using synthetic blend same as factory that it recommends one the first oil change.

you can pretty much find just as much anecdotal and factual info for pro-synth use as you can for pro-cheapy use, so, in the end, it's really just your call.
i used to use synthetic, but after reading too much info on each side i decided to just go with regular for the motor oil, and synthetic for other oils.
the conclusion i've come to is that as long as you change the motor oil regularly, you'll be in good shape either way.
you can also find a gazillion threads already on this subject if you use the search function on this site, or search google.

I'm using Mobil One at the moment but I'm thinking of switching to Royal Purple, I've heard a lot of really good things about it. I know down at work they switched to it for lubrication in all the pumps and compressors (I work at an oil refinery) and they are very impressed with it.

synthetic may be helpful and cost-effective for those lubes that don't get changed very often though.

Ever since I saw that TSB at Alldatadiy.com that says the 5.4 for my '00 EB can and should use 5W-20 (vice the 5W-30 I had been using), that's what I put in it. And recently, I switched to the Motorcraft synth blend version of that 5W-20, which you can buy at Walmart now for cheap. I get the 5gal size (2 of them) for my LOFs. I'm just doin' what Ford recommends and using Ford products. The only leak I have ever seen on this engine is a very, very small oil weep at the front of the drivers' side head just behind the tstat cover - and it's been there for a couple years, even before the switch to synth blend - its a none issue weeping leak, one or two drops at most weeps out per 4-6 months, which I just wipe up. The Motorcraft 5W-20 switch has resulted in way better starts and mileage increased a little - 1.5 to 2.8 mpgs on average, thats the range I've been seeing. Again, I'm sure all the synth oils you see out there, like Royal Purple, Mobil 1, etc are all fine oils and such, but I'd rather use what the mfg recommends. Just my $.02
