Cool Exhaust Gasket Problem!!

I am going to replace my cat. with a directfit cat system and I went to the part stores around town and online trying to find a gasket. I have the donut that goes between the cat and muffler but shouldn't the other end have a gasket also? I am working on a 96 Explorer 4.0. Thanks for any help you can give..

My book says that gaskets are not required between the y-pipe and the manifold. The manifolds should be shaped like a partial ball at the end and the flare of the pipe seals against it metal on metal. If you're doing this yourself, make sure you use a torch to heat the nuts to get them off or there's a real good chance you'll break the studs and the muffler shop will really stick it to you to fix that.

Yeah, you shaould have a "ball and socket" setup to connect the manifolds and y-pipe. To prevent leaks you could use a light coating of Permatex Ultra Copper silicone on the "ball".

If you spray the bolts/nuts several times (Over a couple days) prior to removal they should come loose. Thats what I did before my headers were put on, everything came off fine.
