I own a 2003 lightning with just under 70000 km on it. The other day when I went to start it and notice a puff of blue smoke come out. I bought the truck second hand from a svt dealership with 52000km. I have an extended warranty till 2010 that covers all internal parts so I'm hoping they will replace the engine. I know it could be valve guides letting oil through maybe piston rings.Anybody else have to do this with their lightning? I would rather they replace the engine than to rebuild it. I hardly drive it and may have hit the rev limiter about 3 times since I owned it. For a stock truck with no modifications and low kms I dont think there should be any oil issues yet. I will phone the dealership on monday and see what they will do.
What I have found is when the oil drains under the rocker covers are restricted, oil pools up by the valve springs and leak past the valves and collect in the cylinders. When the initial startup after sitting overnight happens, the oil burns off. Another bunch of possibilities are worn valve guides, bad valve stem seals, cracked piston rings, overheated engine, incorrect viscosity oil or lack of oil causing premature wear.
This is pretty normal for our trucks. Mine will do the same thing if it sits for extended period of time. So long as I drive mine at least a couple of times a week, I get no smoke at start up.
just watch your oil consumption. When you start seeing 1/2 quart or more per 3,000 miles, then you have a problem. but about 1/2 quart per oil change is normal, and nothing to concern yourself about IMO
