High Vol Oil Pump

Have any of you ever heard of a hi vol oil pump causing cam problems. I have a re-built engine and I broke 2 dist shafts. The last time, I installed a Mallory and the people that installed it said it fit a lot better but a freind of mine says it is the high vol pump pushing the cam foward. I think it was the dist.'s that I was running. What do you guys think???

Was there wear on the gear? Where did the shaft break? The gear area or in the middle?

If the camshaft end play is correct you shouldn't have this problem.

What were you doing when you broke the shaft? Driving you grandma to the store? Thrashing through a mud pit?

On the road both times. Not in the mud yet. Shaft broke in the middle at a weak spot

I would check your hood clearance around the distributor. Use some playdough on the cap ontop all the the wires. A nice piece like the size of a sand dollar andout a half inch thick ontop the whole assemble. Then close the hood. See what pattern it pressed on it, and how deep the impression is. You may notice there is a clearance issue. There is a hood support bar that runs real close to the cap area.

I had to cut the hell out of mine for proper clearance the my MSD.

I think it would break the plastic distributor cap before it put enough pressure on the distributor to bind and break the shaft. Even if the hood hit the cap and forced it into the rotor, it will strip the rotor or wear through it.

I've seen hv pumps do some damage. I wouldn't run one if you have a engine with normal clearances. It's quite a bit of stress on the cam gear, distributor gear and distributor shaft. Your lucky it's just the shaft.

A high pressure oil pump will cause issues as they are made for high performance racing engines where your clearances are looser. I'm not even sure if they are available anymore. I haven't seen them advertised in a while.

I would not hesitate to run a high VOLUME oil pump. In fact, ever engine I've rebuilt has one if it was an option.

I'm not really sure. Are you installing the distributors or having it done? Is there something holding it from seating all the way. Do you have to force it down with the retainer clamp?

Did you recently replace the oil pump or has it been there for a while?
You're not running a roller cam are you?

No rolling but hydrolic cam. I had the last installed and they think that it will solve my problem as it seated better.

Are you using an aftermart drive? Is there any verticle play. Have you looked at you oil pump? Reason I ask is there have been problems with shafts binding and having to trim some material. Old Pontiac v8s still use high pressure pumps.

I have seen failure of the ditributor gears using HV pumps. Everything in an engine is built with limits, and I know the argument if it makes to much pressure due to the volume it will run it thru the bypass. Has anyone ever checked to see if the bypass woud handle the extra? What about when the engine is cold or heavy oils are used? Now one more question is the shaft twisting off on the distributor side of the gear or the oil pump side? that will tell you where the excess load is. Kotzy
