The 4.4 diesel is definetly what I'm be waiting for. I see no reason why figures upwards of 25 mpg shouldn't be possible on a 4wd f-150 when geared correctly. Plus add the rumored "power tow" package with integrated trailer brake controller and an air-bag assist over the rear axle(air bag would be aftermarket just to keep things level). I WOULD DEFINETLY DRIVE ONE OFF THE SHOWROOM FLOOR. (I wonder if they're going to do away with the flareside option this year? I love the look of the crew cab with the 6.5' flareside box but I'm not sure if I can see a flareside option working with this new "super duty" style)
If the diesel costs in the same ballpark as an SD diesel, would you still buy the F150? Comparably equiped, they are in the same price range now not counting the diesel.
Personally, I'd go with the SD. The diesel would have to be a 1000 to a max of 2000 dollar option and get at least 25 MPG highway.

I hadn't considered that possibility... I know if it comes down to the same price for both, there better be some serious mileage benefits in going with the f150 to sway me. I like the solid-axle front end on the super duty better anyhow.
Not in the market, being I have an '06 F150 and the wife refuses to let me even think about it. Possibly in 2012 or later I'll look into a new truck, but if I had my pick of any 07/08 model on the road currently, I'd still pick the F150. I've driven each makes 1/2 ton CC with their largest displacement motor (GMC w/5.3L not 6.0L). Still come back to the overall truck and find for your $, Ford has the best 1/2 ton on the market. I could care less who has the most HP/TQ, 0-60 time isn't my main concern. Now I will admit, the F150 needs the 6spd trans, the 4spd just isn't cutting it anymore.
Come 09+, after the release of the Ram & F150, things could change, but basing off style and info. released about each truck, I'd still be swayed to Ford. Then again by 2012, GM, Nissan & Toyota may be releasing a new model, being the trend is now to restyle vehicles every 4-6 years. Of course Nissan may not even have the Titan or 1/2 ton anymore by then.
I love the sound of the 6.2L Twin-Force and the 4.4L diesel, but wouldn't go out and buy one just to have the biggest and baddest truck on the road. I've read and seen some horror stories about the Tundra, just like we did about the Titan. Personally, it would have to be the 3rd model year or later of each motor prior to me purchasing. No matter what make, domestic or forgein, I will never buy a 1st or 2nd model year vehicle. I've seen too many people have too many problems, just look at the 04 F150 or the 07 Tundra as examples.
These are just my thoughts.

No doubt about it, my next truck will be an F-150. I am a Ford man through and through. You won't ever see anything in my driveway other than Ford truck.
After all the ugly crap Ford put out in the 70's and early 80's they should have fired everyone who was involved with that stuff. How those cheesy vehicles ever made it into production is baffling. Say there is a guy left from 78' is NOT a good thing. I swear they same 70's interior designers must have been around up until the last few years. Finally Ford has gotten some new blood and started to make nice interiors.
You ever happen to notice just how many of those "ugly" trucks there are still roaming the streets? For god sakes the things are 20-30+ years old, theres no way you can compair the interior comfort of anything that old to something brand new. They lack the fancy hightech junk of modern vehicles, thats why they still run. They're primitive and simple, they were designed to be that way, they were built in the day when your regular Joe could work on his own vehicle.
Twenty years from now when the 09s are rotting in the junkyard I'll drive by in my rusted out 82 with the odometer thats rolled over 5 or 6 times.
In response to the original question of this thread, NO a 09 F150 wont be my next truck. I already own 3 trucks that do everything I ask. Theres no way I could buy a $30,000+ truck straight up, and there's no way in hell I'm gonna make monthly payments for something I don't need. I don't feel the need to keep up with the Joneses.
My next truck will be whatever catches my eye at the time, my beloved 80-96s aren't gonna be around forever. I'd like to find a beater 97-99 to mess around with, so I can learn the ins and outs of the modular motors before I buy something nice.
Out of principle I'll never buy a brand new vehicle during its first year of production, maybe not for 2 or 3 years. I'm heavily biased twords Ford since thats what I know and love, but I would consider a Chevy or Dodge if the deal was alright.
NO imports will ever disgrace my driveway.

You make an excellent point! IMO...the '73-'79 Ford trucks are the nicest looking. I am particular to the 1976 (see sig)...which is all unique in those model years. With the FE engine series...those are still my favorite FORD trucks out.
I still like the looks of the new '09 F150...and certainly like the technology behind it. Only time will tell...how well it lasts...and takes a beating!
Oh to speak of the glory years.... "Ugly Crap" Is what they're being referred as. Those "ugly crap" trucks, sure they didn't ride amazingly(not what they were designed for)while not made of quiet steel, came with solid axles to handle abuse(no IFS for the wife to ride comfertibly), No fancy climate control or other interior amenities(then again...Cruise control, AC, Map lights in the explorer models were aval. so they weren't unbearable for the wife Just unbearable for those who don't have a want or a need for a vehicle that will last 30+ years of abuse)... On top of all that they still could be worked on by any regular joe, and are still around doing the same jobs they were designed for and have been doing for 40 years. While some describe it as "ugly crap" I hope I'm not alone when I say I think it's a beautiful thing. And as for those who think it's still "ugly crap" Don't worry, Ford probably won't build another truck that you'll have to look at for 30+ years again.
I'm tryin to talk the old lady into an F150 when her lease is up next year. She loves my 96 for the crewcab but can't handle a 20'+ long truck overly well(by her own admission). We've been eying some used 04-08 F150s but she is insistent on something 'new'. So when that time comes the 'new' option will be the new body style, we might even be into the '10 model year at that time. We'll see if I can talk her into the diesel or the big V8
I had a 2005 XL work truck, possibly the best truck I've ever owned. I had an accident in early January and State Farm declared it a total loss. So, my replacement choices seemed to be:
1. Order a 2008 XL exactly the way I want it.
2. Deal for a leftover 2007, probably an XLT.
3. Order a 2009.
I was leaning towards the 2007, but then I read about the Ford Work Solutions (in-dash PC with broadband internet access, RFID tool tracker, Master cable lock in the bed) and I'm very impressed. These features are ten times more useful to me than another 50 HP! So I'm going to be checking out the prices when they are available in March and decide then.
This sounds like a great package.
The advice to avoid first years of a new model is generally good. I think the 2009 will not be as bad as the last two major changes. I believe that every manufacturer had problems when they switched to CANBUS, as Ford did in 2004. Also, the new engines are nothing like the sea changes of the first modulars in 1997. So the 2009, while still susceptible to problems, is probably going to be a cleaner launch than the 1997 or 2004. But who knows?
